Chapter 6 - THE BASEMENT BALLET

🔨 4:30 A.M. The Extraction of Truth: How a Mob Boss Handles BetrayalThe basement garage of the estate was a cold, cavernous space of reinforced concrete and steel pillars. The air smelled of oil, wet tires, and fear.

Marcus was tied to a heavy wooden chair in the center of the room, his face covered in blood and sweat. He was one of Gabriel’s youngest enforcers, a kid he had taken off the streets of the north side three years ago.

"Gabriel," Marcus gasped, his chest heaving as the mob boss walked into the light of the single overhead bulb. "Please, Gabriel. I had to. They have my sister. The Rossis... they have her."

Gabriel didn't answer. He walked over to a workbench, picked up a heavy leather-wrapped steel rod, and weighed it in his hand.

"How much did they pay you, Marcus?" Gabriel asked, his voice disturbingly calm.

"Nothing! I swear!" Marcus wept, his body shaking against the ropes. "They told me they’d send her head in a box if I didn't tell them where Chloe was going tonight. I didn't know they were going to kill her, Gabriel! I thought they just wanted to talk to her! To use her as leverage!"

Gabriel walked back to the chair. He stood before the kid, his eyes flat, empty of all human warmth.

"You've been with me for three years, Marcus," Gabriel said. "You know what happens to people who sell out my family."

"Please, Boss! Please!"

Gabriel raised the steel rod.

"Who is leading the Rossis?" Gabriel demanded. "The old man is dead. His sons are in federal prison. Who is running the show?"

"It’s... it’s the sister," Marcus sobbed, his eyes wide with terror as the rod hovered inches from his face. "Nora. Nora Rossi. She’s back from New York. She’s the one who took over the docks. She’s the one who ordered the hit."

Gabriel’s arm froze.

Nora Rossi.

The waitress from the diner in Queens. The one who had saved Marcello Vitucci five years ago and then vanished into the shadows of the East Coast.

"She's here?" Gabriel asked.

"Yes! She’s at Pier 40!" Marcus yelled. "She’s waiting for the news that Chloe is dead so she can launch the assault on your warehouses. She has forty men with her, Gabriel! They're heavily armed!"

Gabriel lowered the steel rod. He turned to Russo, who was standing in the shadows with his hands folded.

"Get the men," Gabriel ordered. "All of them. We're going to Pier 40."

"And Marcus?" Russo asked, looking at the weeping kid in the chair.

Gabriel looked at Marcus one last time. "Put him in a cell. If his sister is still alive, we find her. If she’s dead... he goes into the Sound with the rest of the trash."

He turned and walked back toward the stairs.

But as he reached the first step, the alarm system of the estate began to wail—a high-pitched, rhythmic electronic scream that echoed through the concrete garage.

The monitors on the wall flashed red.

"They didn't wait for the news," Russo hissed, drawing his weapon. "They're already here."
