CHAPTER 5 – The Trap Beneath the Mansion

The note trembled in Evelyn's hands.

"If you want the boy alive... come alone."

Her heart pounded so violently she could barely breathe.

"Leo..." she whispered.

Ignoring Margaret's warning, Evelyn slipped away from the ballroom before anyone could stop her.

Outside, another note waited beneath the palace fountain.

"Go to the old wine cellar."

It was the oldest part of the Sterling estate, sealed off after a mysterious fire nearly twenty years earlier.

No servants were allowed inside.

No guests even knew it existed.

Holding a flashlight, Evelyn pushed open the rusted iron door.

The smell of damp stone filled the air.

Every step echoed through the darkness.

Then...

She heard a child's voice.

"Aunt Evelyn..."

"Help me..."

It was Leo.

She ran toward the sound until she reached a heavy steel door.

It creaked open.

Inside sat Leo, tied to an old wooden chair—but completely unharmed.

The moment he saw Evelyn, tears filled his eyes.

"You came..."

Before Evelyn could untie him...

The steel door slammed shut behind her.

The lights flickered on.

Slow...

Deliberate...

Applause echoed through the cellar.

Victoria stepped out of the shadows.

Richard followed.

But they weren't alone.

An elderly man in a tailored black suit emerged behind them.

His silver cane struck the stone floor with every step.

Evelyn's blood turned to ice.

"Uncle Edward..."

He had disappeared from public life fifteen years earlier after claiming poor health.

Everyone believed he was living quietly overseas.

Instead...

He had been hiding beneath the family estate.

Edward smiled.

"I've watched you grow up, Evelyn."

"You became exactly what we needed."

Evelyn stared at him in disbelief.

"You planned all of this?"

Edward nodded.

"Not just this."

"I planned everything."

"The fire."

"Clara's disappearance."

"Richard's arrival."

"Even your engagement."

Leo looked up in confusion.

"You... you're the bad man my mom talked about."

Edward laughed.

"Your mother was far too curious."

He snapped his fingers.

A projector suddenly illuminated the stone wall.

Old security footage appeared.

Evelyn watched in horror as Clara argued—not with Richard...

But with Edward.

Richard had only been the man carrying out orders.

Edward had been the mastermind from the very beginning.

"You wanted the company," Evelyn whispered.

Edward shook his head.

"No."

"I wanted something hidden beneath it."

He pressed a remote.

The stone floor rumbled.

A massive section of the cellar slowly opened.

Beneath it lay a secret underground vault.

Not filled with gold.

Not filled with cash.

But hundreds of shelves containing confidential government files, rare artworks, priceless jewels, and decades of blackmail evidence against some of the world's most powerful people.

Richard grinned.

"The Sterling fortune was never the real prize."

Victoria added coldly,

"The vault is worth fifty times more than the company."

Evelyn finally understood.

Her family empire had only been a cover.

The real fortune had been hidden beneath the mansion for generations.

Clara had discovered the truth.

That was why they tried to kill her.

Edward stepped closer.

"There is only one problem."

"You still control the biometric lock."

Evelyn frowned.

"What lock?"

Edward smiled.

"The vault only opens completely for the legal head of the Sterling family."

He raised a syringe filled with a clear liquid.

"So you'll give us access..."

"...or you'll watch your nephew die."

Leo squeezed Evelyn's hand.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"Aunt Evelyn..."

"My mom told me..."

"...there's one thing they still don't know."

Evelyn looked at him.

"What is it?"

Leo slowly reached into his shoe.

He pulled out a tiny golden key.

"I've had this since the day she disappeared."

Edward's confident smile vanished instantly.

His hands began to shake.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

He lunged toward the boy.

But before he could reach him...

The key suddenly began to glow beneath the vault's scanner.

A mechanical voice echoed through the underground chamber.

"Identity confirmed."

"Welcome back... Clara Sterling."

Every face turned toward Leo.

Because if the vault recognized Clara...

Then the woman everyone believed had died...

May you like

Might still be alive.
