🔥 CHAPTER 9 — The Monster's Last Secret

Nathan fled through an underground tunnel.
I chased him.
Ignoring the pain.
Ignoring the smoke.
Ignoring the sirens above us.
The tunnel ended beneath an abandoned church.
Nathan stood beside a helicopter already warming its engines.
He looked at me calmly.
"You still don't understand."
"What else is there?"
He laughed.
"You think I wanted your money?"
"No."
"I wanted revenge."
He reached into his coat and tossed me an old newspaper.
Date:
Twenty-six years earlier.
Headline:
LOCAL TEEN KILLED IN HIT-AND-RUN. DRIVER NEVER FOUND.
The victim's photograph stole the air from my lungs.
Nathan's younger sister.
Emily.
I remembered her.
She had been my first love.
I remembered the accident.
The rain.
The screaming.
The car disappearing into the darkness.
Nathan stared into my eyes.
"You've spent twenty-six years blaming yourself."
"I didn't kill Emily."
"I know."
I looked up.
"What?"
"The driver wasn't you."
He smiled bitterly.
"It was your father."
The world collapsed.
"My father covered it up."
"He framed you."
"He let you believe you'd destroyed her life."
"He paid the police."
"He bought the judge."
"And when my family demanded justice..."
Nathan's voice cracked for the first time.
"...they laughed at us."
Everything.
Every lie.
Every manipulation.
Every broken life.
Had begun with one crime buried decades ago.
Police flooded the church.
Nathan looked at the officers.
Then back at me.
"You know the funniest part?"
"What?"
"I was finally going to stop."
Before anyone could reach him—
He stepped backward into the helicopter.
But the damaged rotor struck a stone arch as it lifted.
The aircraft spun violently.
Nathan's eyes met mine one last time.
There was no anger left.
Only exhaustion.
The helicopter crashed into the empty churchyard in a ball of fire.
The man who had destroyed hundreds of families disappeared in seconds.
Weeks later, investigators opened the basement locker Rebecca had died protecting.
Inside were thousands of files.
Enough evidence to dismantle an international trafficking and psychological coercion network that had operated for more than two decades.
More than one hundred children were reunited with their families.
Josephine testified in court.
Lily finally started calling me "Dad" without hesitation.
As for Mrs. Gable...
The woman everyone dismissed as a nosy neighbor became the unexpected hero of the entire case.
Sometimes the person everyone ignores is the only one brave enough to tell the truth.

The scream you choose not to investigate becomes the one that changes your life forever.
