Chapter 6 - The Viper in the Garden

The harbor incident cemented Maria’s position not just as an employee, but as an untouchable force within the Moretti syndicate.
Yet, within the shadows of the estate, a deeper conspiracy was quietly taking root.
Arthur Vance, humiliated by his brother’s arrest and terrified that Maria would eventually uncover his own embezzlement schemes within the corporate division, decided to strike back through the one vulnerability Maria possessed: her daughter, Lily.
It was a crisp Thursday afternoon when Maria received an encrypted text message on her secure terminal while sitting in her office.
If you ever want to see your daughter alive again, walk out of the Moretti Tower alone and come to the old train yard by Pier 14. No guards. No Daniel.
The world stopped spinning.
Maria’s breath caught in her throat. The phone slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering against the glass desk.
Lily.
Without thinking, Maria grabbed her coat, bolted out of her office, and ran toward the private elevators. She didn't call Victor. She didn't tell Daniel. In that moment, maternal instinct completely overrode every lesson in syndicate survival she had learned over the last two months.
By the time she reached the abandoned train yard at Pier 14, the sun was sinking below the horizon, casting long, skeletal shadows across rusted rail cars and overgrown weeds.
“Lily!” Maria screamed, her voice cracking in the cold wind. “Lily!”
A heavy metal door creaked open inside an old maintenance shed.
Step by step, Arthur Vance emerged from the darkness. He wasn't holding a gun to Lily; instead, Lily was sitting calmly on a wooden crate inside, sipping hot cocoa, completely unaware of the danger. Arthur, however, held a detonator wired to a cluster of propane tanks lined up against the exterior wall of the shed.
“Arthur!” Maria snarled, her eyes blazing with murderous fury. “Let her go!”
“Step back, Maria,” Arthur said, his face twisted in desperate rage. “You ruined everything. You and your petty morality. You took my brother down, and you were about to expose my accounts next. So we’re going to play a new game.”
“She’s a child!” Maria screamed, taking a step forward. “Leave her out of this!”
“She’s a Moretti asset now,” Arthur sneered, his thumb hovering over the red button on the detonator. “And you’re going to walk into that shed, lock the door from the inside, and let me walk away with the corporate override codes. If you don't, this entire shed goes up in flames.”
Maria looked at Lily, who looked up from her cocoa and waved happily through the dirty window. “ Mommy! Look, the nice man gave me chocolate!”
Tears streamed down Maria’s face, but her heart hardened into absolute steel.
“You think you’ve won, Arthur?” Maria whispered, her voice dangerously calm.
“I have the detonator, Maria. I’ve won.”
“You forgot one crucial detail,” Maria said, her lips curving into a chilling smile. “You never checked the timestamp on my secure terminal before I left the office.”
Arthur frowned. “What are you talking about?”
Suddenly, the night sky above the train yard erupted with the blinding glare of a dozen helicopter searchlights.
The roar of heavy turbine engines drowned out the wind as three black tactical helicopters dropped out of the clouds, hovering directly overhead like descending war gods.

From the shadows behind Arthur, dozens of heavily armed men materialized, their laser sights painting a crimson constellation across his chest.
And stepping out from the lead tactical transport, walking with slow, terrifying grace, was Daniel Moretti.
