"Get that bald woman back into the kitchen! My friends don't need to see her looking like that!" Brenda shouted from the terrace.
Andrés Salgado froze behind the front gate, his suitcase still in his hand.
He had returned without warning after four years working at an agricultural machinery factory in Edmonton, Canada. He had endured 12-hour shifts, brutal winters, and shared living quarters so he could send nearly 500,000 pesos every year to his mother, Ofelia.
The money had a clear purpose: to finish building the family home near Irapuato, support his wife, Marisol, and save enough to open an auto repair shop when he came back. Altogether, he had transferred almost 2 million pesos.
As he stepped inside, he saw a two-story house, a brand-new kitchen, leather furniture, an electric gate, and a recently purchased pickup truck.
For a few seconds, he believed every sacrifice had been worth it.

His wife was completely bald.

"Who did this to you?"
Marisol opened her mouth to answer, but Ofelia appeared wearing a new dress, a gold necklace, and freshly manicured nails.
"She brought it on herself," she said casually. "She started using cheap products, stopped eating, and became dramatic. Don't come back believing everything she tells you."
Brenda stepped out behind her mother carrying a designer handbag and jingling the keys to the new pickup truck.
"Seriously, bro, she's become impossible," Brenda sneered. "She lives off your money and still wants everyone to feel sorry for her."
Andrés noticed a bandage beneath Marisol's blouse and yellowing bruises on her arm.
Rage rose into his throat.
But he didn't say a word.
The bank account was in Ofelia's name.
The house had been temporarily registered under Brenda's name because Andrés had been living abroad.
If he confronted them without evidence, they could empty the accounts, hide documents, and blame everything on Marisol.

Andrés smiled.
"I didn't just come back for vacation," he said. "The company is shutting down one of its production lines, and they're giving me a severance package of 4.8 million pesos. But before they can release the money, I have to prove that I own property and investments in Mexico."
Ofelia's eyes lit up.
Brenda immediately started asking how long it would take for the money to arrive.
That night, in the damp little room where Marisol had been forced to sleep, Andrés closed the door.
Marisol slowly unbuttoned her blouse and revealed a fresh surgical scar across her chest.
"I have cancer," she whispered. "They found a tumor five months ago."
She had asked for 6,000 pesos to pay for medical tests.
Ofelia refused.
She searched through Marisol's phone and threatened to throw her out if she told Andrés anything.
With no access to the money, Marisol sold her long hair for 3,000 pesos just to pay for a biopsy.
While Andrés's mother was buying gold jewelry...

Andrés held her tightly in his arms.
He turned off the light and stared at the ceiling.
