Chapter 17 - THE FINAL AUDIT

It took three grueling days of international red tape, secure encrypted handovers via British intelligence liaisons, and Marcus working twenty-hour shifts back in the States to completely neutralize Julian’s final corporate coup.

When I finally stepped off the plane at the local airport, the crisp American air felt sweeter than ever.

I drove straight home. The house looked magnificent against the afternoon sun, the hydrangeas blooming in vibrant purples and blues, the front porch immaculate and welcoming.

I walked up the steps and pushed open the front door.

Mom was sitting in the living room, knitting a soft grey blanket while classical music played softly from the stereo. She looked up as I walked in, her face breaking into a warm, radiant smile.

"You're back early, sweetheart," she said, setting her knitting needles down on the side table. "How was your... little business trip?"

I walked over, dropped my duffel bag on the floor, and knelt down in front of her chair—the same posture I had taken on the darkest day of my life, but this time, there was no fear, no tears, and no shadows lingering behind us.

I took her soft, warm hands in mine.

"It was a long trip, Mom," I smiled, resting my head against her knee. "But the last ghost has been put to rest. We are completely, truly safe now."

Mom gently stroked my hair, her eyes shining with unconditional love. "Your father would be so proud of the woman you've become, Jessi. You protected this family when the world tried to tear us apart."

My phone remained silent in my pocket for the rest of the evening. No emergency alerts. No threatening messages. No hidden enemies lurking in the shadows.

For the first time in six years, the silence wasn't terrifying. It was peaceful.
