Chapter 5 - THE CELL DOOR LOCKS

The next twenty minutes were a blur of flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the living room windows. Neighbors stepped out onto their porches, whispering behind cupped hands as uniformed officers marched Luca and Wendy out of the house in handcuffs.
Luca glared at me with absolute venom as they shoved him into the back of the cruiser, screaming curses that were cut short as the heavy door slammed shut.
Wendy was in hysterics, sobbing about her social standing and her ruined reputation as an officer gently guided her into a separate vehicle.
I didn't watch them drive away. My entire focus was inside the house, where a paramedic and a trusted social worker were currently sitting with my mother in the kitchen.
I walked slowly down the hall, pushing open the kitchen door. The red wine stain was still on the marble floor, but the terrifying atmosphere had lifted.
Mom was sitting at the kitchen island, wrapped in a warm fleece blanket, drinking a cup of chamomile tea. The faded maid's uniform had already been discarded; she was wearing her favorite floral cardigan now.
She looked up as I entered, her cloudy eyes blinking uncertainly.
"Jessi?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "Is... are they gone?"
I rushed forward, dropping to my knees right beside her chair—the exact same spot where I had found her scrubbing the floor just hours ago. This time, I took her fragile, bruised hands in mine, pressing them gently against my cheek.
"They’re gone, Mom," I choked out, tears finally breaking free and spilling down my face. "They’re never coming back here again. I’m home. I’m right here."
Mom stared at me for a long, agonizing moment. The heavy fog in her eyes seemed to part, just a fraction. She reached out with a trembling hand and brushed a stray lock of hair away from my forehead.
"You have your father’s eyes," she murmured softly, a small, lucid smile touching her lips. "I knew you’d come back. I told your father you’d protect us."
May you like
My heart ached with a mixture of overwhelming relief and deep sorrow. "What did you mean earlier, Mom? The tiny key you pressed into my hand... and what Dad said?"
Mom blinked, furrowing her brow as she tried to piece the memory together. "Your father... before he passed away, he knew how ambitious Luca was. He made me promise to hide a safety deposit box key in the old grandfather clock in the study. He said... if Luca ever started acting like the owner of everything, your true inheritance was hidden inside."
