Chapter 9 - THE SHADOW AT THE GATE

Two years passed in a blur of profound peace and healing.
Mom’s health stabilized remarkably well. The garden she loved so much was overflowing with blooming hydrangeas and vibrant rose bushes. She spent her mornings baking lemon tarts and her afternoons reading on the porch, surrounded by the warmth of a home that was truly safe.
I had transitioned my career, shifting from grueling overseas consulting to a remote executive role that allowed me to work from the sunroom while keeping a watchful, loving eye on my mother.
We had rebuilt our lives from the ashes. We thought the nightmare was permanently behind us.
Until a crisp Tuesday morning in late October.
I was walking down the driveway to grab the mail when a sleek, unfamiliar black sedan pulled up to the curb. The tinted window rolled down slowly, revealing a face I hadn't expected to see for at least another decade.
It was a man in an expensive, sharply tailored Brioni suit, wearing aviator sunglasses that reflected the morning sun. He stepped out of the vehicle with an easy, arrogant swagger that instantly sent a jolt of ice down my spine.
It wasn't Luca—Luca was still rotting behind federal bars.
It was a man who looked strikingly like him, but older, colder, and infinitely more dangerous.
"Jessi Vance, I presume?" the man asked, his voice smooth as silk, carrying a chilling undertone of menace.
I gripped the stack of mail tightly in my hand, standing my ground at the edge of the driveway. "Who are you, and what are you doing on private property?"
The man smiled, adjusting his cuffs. "Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Julian Vance. Luca’s older, much smarter half-brother from our father’s first marriage—the one your father paid off and banished to Europe thirty years ago."
My breath caught in my throat.
Another brother?

Julian took a slow step closer, his eyes scanning the sprawling house with predatory interest.
"Luca was an idiot," Julian chuckled softly, pulling a folded document from his breast pocket. "He tried to steal an empire with a hammer when he should have used a scalpel. But don't worry, little sister... I’m here to finish what he started. And according to a secret codicil in our father's true original will, this house—and everything in it—legally belongs to me."
