Chapter 6 - The Final Algorithm

The screen flashed from angry red to a steady, pulsing blue.

SYSTEM OVERRIDE SUCCESSFUL. DATA TRANSFER HALTED.

Isabella slumped back in the leather chair, gasping for air as if she had just surfaced from a deep, freezing ocean. The rhythmic clicking of the computer fan was the only sound in the ruined study, save for the distant, booming thunder outside.

Aleandro stood over the desk, his chest heaving, the Sig Sauer still warm in his hand. He looked down at Isabella. The emerald dress was stained with dirt and sweat, her hair disheveled. The fierce, untouchable mob princess was gone, replaced by a shattered woman realizing she had nearly destroyed her own life for a ghost.

"Why didn't you kill me when you had the chance?" Isabella whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the machine. "In the greenhouse. You knew I planted the bug. You knew I was working with my father."

"Because a dead enemy tells no truths," Aleandro said flatly. He picked up the titanium key fob and pocketed it. "And because I wanted to look into your eyes when I found out if you ever felt anything real."

Isabella flinched as if struck. "And did I?"

Before Aleandro could answer, heavy boots thundered down the hallway.

The remaining Moretti loyalists, led by Salvatore Romano and a dozen heavily armed men, burst into the study. Salvatore scanned the room, saw the frozen laptop screen, and let out a long, heavy sigh of relief.

"The federal perimeter is breached," Salvatore said, his voice urgent. "We have less than three minutes before the FBI tactical team clears the front gates. We need to move. Now."

"Where is Emma?" Aleandro’s head snapped toward Salvatore.

"Safely loaded into the armored transport with her mother in the underground garage," Salvatore replied. "They're heading to the safehouse in Queens."

Aleandro nodded once, then turned his gaze back to Isabella. He reached down, grabbed her hand, and pulled her to her feet.

"You're coming with us," Aleandro said.

"Why?" Isabella asked, bewildered. "Your empire is saved. Your enemies are dead or captured. Why keep the traitor around?"

"Because," Aleandro said, his voice dropping to a low, intense register, "the war isn't over yet. Marcus was just a lieutenant. The person who funded his entire operation—the one who actually gave him the master encryption keys—is still out there, watching us right now."
