CHAPTER 7 – The Fourth Name Was Still Alive

The warehouse fell into stunned silence.
The scarred woman stepped between the little boy and the man in the black suit.
"No!" she shouted. "Don't tell him yet!"
The man lowered his pistol but never took his eyes off the child.
"He deserves the truth."
The little boy's voice trembled.
"Who are you?"
The stranger slowly held out the faded family photograph.
It was the same picture the old prisoner had carried for eight years.
Except this copy wasn't damaged.
The face that had been burned away was still visible.
The little boy gasped.
It wasn't the commander.
It wasn't Prisoner 417.
It wasn't Adrian Black.
It was the man standing in front of him.
"My name is Nathan Hale," he said quietly.
"I was your father's twin brother."
The commander staggered backward.
"No..."
"Your brother died during Operation Heir."
Nathan's expression hardened.
"That's the story they created."
"They buried my identity... and stole my family."
The old prisoner slowly nodded.
"I watched them erase every record."
The scarred woman closed her eyes.
"I helped them."
The little boy looked at her in shock.
"You... helped them?"
Tears streamed down her face.
"They threatened to kill you."
"They said if I disappeared... you would live."
She reached into her pocket and removed a tiny silver key.
It matched the one the little boy had carried from the beginning.
"There were always two keys."
"One opened the vault."
"The other opened the truth."
She handed the key to the boy.
At that exact moment, the warehouse floor shook violently.
A hidden vault door beneath Cell 17 unlocked with a thunderous metallic roar.
Dust filled the air.
Inside the underground chamber sat a single steel cradle.
The little boy slowly walked toward it.
There was no treasure.
No gold.
No classified documents.
Only a sealed envelope with his name written across the front.
ETHAN
OPEN ONLY ON YOUR EIGHTH BIRTHDAY
With trembling hands, he broke the seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
He recognized the handwriting immediately.
It was his mother's.
The first sentence stole the breath from everyone in the room.
"If you are reading this, then every man standing around you has lied... including me."
Before Ethan could read another word...
A single gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
Nathan's body jerked backward.
A dark stain spread across his chest.
He collapsed to the floor.
The little boy screamed.
The shooter slowly stepped out from the shadows, lowering a silenced pistol.
He smiled coldly.
"You've all been searching for the wrong enemy."
Then he removed his tactical mask.
The commander stared in horror.
It was his own deputy...
The man he had trusted for more than twenty years.
And he calmly whispered,
May you like
"Project Heir was never about protecting a child."
"It was about creating the perfect weapon."
