Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW IN THE HOSPITAL

Arthur did not use his cane as he walked to his private limousine. The adrenaline of a new, terrifying reality kept him upright. In his hand, he clutched Theo’s small blue jacket.

"Drive to Boston General," Arthur ordered his chauffeur. "And call the Chief of Medicine. Tell him if Samuel Carter’s son or family is denied a single breath of medical care, I will buy the hospital and fire every board member by midnight."

As the limousine sped through the snow-slicked streets of Boston, Arthur looked at the tablet computer in his lap. Marcus had sent over the leaked files.

For years, Arthur had kept meticulous records of his "tests." The names of those who failed, those he had fired, and those he had ruined. Someone had hacked his secure server. But they hadn't just leaked the data to ruin Arthur's reputation—they were using it to track down the desperate people Arthur had interacted with.

A headline flashed on a dark-web forum: “Pembroke’s Puppets: How the Billionaire Ruined Lives for Fun. Find them first.”

"Who leaked this, Marcus?" Arthur demanded over the speakerphone.

"We are tracing the IP, sir, but it’s sophisticated. It looks like an inside job. Someone from your own board of directors. They want to force a vote of no confidence to oust you as CEO, using your 'cruelty' as leverage. If they can get one of your former victims to sue you publicly, you lose the company."

Arthur’s jaw tightened. "And Samuel Carter is the perfect pawn."

Ten minutes later, the limousine pulled up to the emergency entrance of Boston General. Arthur stepped out into the freezing wind, carrying the child’s jacket. He marched through the sliding glass doors, his security detail clearing a path.

He found Samuel Carter in the waiting room, head in his hands, weeping. Theo was sitting next to him, shivering in his thin shirt, his arms wrapped around his chest.

"Samuel," Arthur said.

Samuel jumped up, his eyes wide with terror. He instinctively shielded Theo. "Mr. Pembroke! I’m sorry! I’m so sorry we left without permission! I didn't steal anything, I swear to God—"

"Quiet, Samuel," Arthur said, his voice surprisingly soft. He stepped forward and knelt down—a painful effort for his seventy-six-year-old joints—right in front of Theo.

He held out the blue jacket. "You forgot this, young man."

Theo’s eyes lit up. "My jacket! Thank you, mister!"

Samuel looked bewildered. "Mr. Pembroke... I don't understand."

"Your son taught me a lesson today, Samuel. One I sorely needed," Arthur said, standing up with difficulty. "Now, tell me. Why are you here?"

Samuel swallowed hard, tears shining in his eyes. "My wife... she passed away last year. But my daughter, Lily—Theo's baby sister—she has a congenital heart defect. The hospital just called. Her monitor flagged an anomaly. They won't admit her to the specialized wing because my insurance was canceled last week."

Arthur felt a sickening twist in his stomach. He was the one who had ordered the company’s insurance policies to be trimmed to save costs last quarter.

Before Arthur could speak, a tall, sharply dressed man in a grey wool coat walked into the waiting room. He had a slick, predatory smile.

"Well, well. Arthur Pembroke in a public hospital waiting room," the man said, pulling out a smartphone and recording a video. "Are you here to offer them a fake envelope of cash, Arthur? Or are you here to buy their silence before the media finds out how you treat your staff?"

Arthur’s blood ran cold. It was Julian Vance, his ambitious, ruthless Vice President.

HOOK / CLIFFHANGER: Julian smiled maliciously, looking down at Theo. "Tell me, little boy. Did the mean old billionaire try to trick you today? Tell the camera, and I’ll make sure your sister gets her surgery tonight."
