Chapter 3 - THE BILLION-DOLLAR BARGAIN

The waiting room went dead silent. The hum of the fluorescent lights suddenly sounded deafening.
Samuel looked back and forth between the predatory Julian Vance and the legendary, terrifying Arthur Pembroke. He was a desperate father. He needed money for his daughter's life-saving surgery.
"Julian," Arthur growled, stepping between his Vice President and the child. "Get that camera out of his face before I have my security throw you out of this window."
"Oh, please, Arthur. You don't have the power you think you do anymore," Julian sneered, lowering the phone but keeping his smug grin. "The board is meeting tomorrow morning. The leaked files of your 'conscience tests' have already wiped four billion dollars off our market cap. The public is furious. They want your head on a spike. If I walk into that board meeting with a signed statement from Samuel Carter detailing your psychological abuse, I will be named CEO by noon."
Julian turned to Samuel, his eyes gleaming with artificial warmth. "Samuel, listen to me. I know about your daughter, Lily. I will personally write a check for five hundred thousand dollars for her surgery tonight. All you have to do is sign a declaration stating that Arthur Pembroke subjected you and your son to a hostile, abusive work environment today."
Samuel gasped. Five hundred thousand dollars. It was everything he had prayed for. It was his daughter's life.
He looked at Arthur.
Arthur stood perfectly still. His heart was pounding. For twenty years, he would have expected Samuel to take the money. In fact, he would have assumed it. Everyone has a price. If Samuel took the deal, Arthur’s life’s work—his empire—would be completely destroyed.
"Go ahead, Samuel," Arthur said quietly.
Samuel blinked. "What?"
"Take his deal," Arthur said, his voice cracking slightly. "Save your daughter. I won't hold it against you. It is what any good father would do."
Julian laughed victoriously. "See? Even the old monster knows he’s beaten. Sign the papers, Samuel. Let's save your little girl."
Julian pulled a document from his leather briefcase and handed Samuel a pen. Samuel’s hand shook violently. He looked at the pen, then at the document, and finally at his son, Theo.
Theo was looking up at his father, clutching his blue jacket. "Daddy... is that the man who wants to hurt the nice grandpa who was cold?"
Samuel stopped. He looked at Arthur Pembroke. He saw the tears that had dried on the old man's face. He saw the genuine, agonizing remorse in the billionaire’s eyes—a look that could never be faked.
Samuel slowly put the pen down.
"No," Samuel said.
Julian’s smile vanished. "Excuse me? Are you stupid? Your daughter is going to die!"
"I won't lie for you," Samuel said, his voice growing stronger. "Mr. Pembroke didn't abuse us. He didn't do anything to us. My son saw a cold old man and covered him. That was our choice. I won't use my daughter's life to help you destroy someone else. God will find another way to help us."
Julian’s face turned purple with rage. "You absolute fool! You've just signed your daughter's death warrant!"

"He did no such thing," Arthur Pembroke roared, his voice echoing through the hospital. He stepped forward, his eyes blazing with a fire that hadn't been seen in decades. "Because as of five minutes ago, I purchased this entire hospital network. And Julian... you're fired."
HOOK / CLIFFHANGER: Julian’s jaw dropped. But his shock quickly turned into a dark, twisted grin. "Fired? You can't fire me, Arthur. You don't know what I've already done. Look at your phone."
