Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF LOYALTY

Arthur stood frozen at the bottom of the staircase. Samuel quickly pulled Theo behind his back, shielding the boy.
"Marcus," Arthur said, his voice remarkably calm despite the gun pointed at him. "Twenty years. I treated you like a son."
"You treated me like an employee, Arthur!" Marcus snarled, his eyes wild. "You tested me. Do you think I don't know? Ten years ago, you left a diamond necklace in the guest bathroom. You wanted to see if I'd steal it. I found it, and I gave it back to you. And what did I get? A nod of approval and another year of working eighty hours a week while you made billions!"
Arthur felt a stab of guilt. Marcus was right. His paranoia had poisoned every relationship he had ever cultivated. He had kept everyone at a distance, treating loyalty as a transaction.
"I was wrong, Marcus," Arthur said openly. "My paranoia was a disease. But this is not the way."
"It's the only way!" Marcus shouted. "Julian is waiting at the private hangar. We split the bonds, and we disappear. Now, step aside, or I will end this tonight."
"Don't do this, please," Samuel pleaded from behind Arthur. "You don't want to become a monster."
"Shut up!" Marcus screamed, aiming the gun at Samuel. "You got lucky, janitor! You and your kid got a free pass. But some of us have been bleeding for this man for decades!"
Suddenly, Theo stepped out from behind his father’s legs.
Before anyone could stop him, the seven-year-old boy began walking slowly up the grand staircase, straight toward the armed man.
"Theo! No!" Samuel cried out in pure terror, reaching for his son, but Arthur held him back, recognizing a strange, powerful shift in the room.
"Theo, stop!" Arthur yelled.
But Theo kept climbing. He looked up at Marcus with wide, innocent eyes. In his tiny hands, he was holding his small blue jacket.
"You look cold, mister," Theo said, his voice echoing in the massive foyer. "Your hands are shaking. Just like the grandpa's were."
Marcus stared at the boy. His grip on the gun faltered. "Kid... get back. I'm warning you."
"My daddy says when people are angry, it’s because they are hurting inside," Theo said, taking another step up. "You don't need that gun. The grandpa isn't mean. He's just lonely."
A heavy silence fell over the foyer.
Marcus looked at the boy. He looked at the cheap, worn blue jacket. The sheer, unadulterated innocence of the child seemed to pierce through the thick armor of Marcus’s greed and anger. For a second, the gun lowered. Tears welled in Marcus's eyes.
But then, the front doors of the mansion burst open.
Julian Vance walked in, accompanied by two hired thugs.
"Marcus! What are you doing?!" Julian screamed. "Shoot them and let's go! The police are already tracking the leaked files!"
May you like
Marcus spun around, startled. In the confusion, one of Julian’s thugs drew a weapon and fired a shot toward the staircase.
HOOK / CLIFFHANGER: A loud BANG echoed through the mansion. Arthur screamed as a body fell down the marble stairs. But it wasn't Arthur, and it wasn't Marcus.
