CHAPTER 1 At My Husband's Funeral, His Mother Left Me to Give Birth Alone... Twelve Days Later, She Knocked on My Door Begging for a Grandchild She Never Deserved

The first contraction hit so hard that I nearly collapsed into my husband's grave.

Rain hammered against the cemetery, turning polished marble into slick mirrors. Hundreds of mourners stood beneath expensive black umbrellas, whispering condolences they would forget before dinner.

I heard none of them.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat...

...and the sound of dirt striking the top of Daniel Carter's coffin.

Three days earlier, Daniel had kissed my forehead before leaving for what was supposed to be a routine business flight.

The plane never arrived.

Neither did he.

Now I stood eight months and three weeks pregnant, watching strangers lower the love of my life beneath the earth.

Another contraction ripped through my body.

Warm liquid rushed down both legs.

For one terrifying second I froze.

"No..."

I looked down.

My dress was soaked.

My baby had chosen this exact moment to enter the world.

I stumbled toward my mother-in-law, Vivian Carter.

She wore diamonds beneath her funeral veil, her makeup flawless despite the rain.

"Please," I whispered. "My water broke."

She glanced downward as though she had noticed mud on an expensive carpet.

Then she calmly stepped backward.

"This isn't the time."

"I need an ambulance."

Her expression never changed.

"My son is being buried."

"So is my husband!"

Several guests turned toward us.

Vivian immediately lowered her voice.

"Do not create a scene."

I could hardly breathe.

"I think the baby's coming."

She folded her gloved hands.

"Then call someone."

"I am asking you."

"You've always been dramatic, Emma."

Her words hurt more than the contractions.

Daniel's younger brother, Lucas, walked over holding his phone.

"What's happening?"

"Emma has decided today's funeral should become about herself."

I stared at him in disbelief.

"My baby..."

Lucas sighed.

"There are rideshare apps."

"My contractions are two minutes apart."

He checked his watch.

"I've got lawyers waiting downtown."

Then he handed me a business card.

A taxi company.

Nothing else.

No hug.

No support.

No humanity.

The Carter family turned back toward the grave.

They watched Daniel disappear beneath the ground...

...while I slowly walked out of the cemetery alone.

No one followed.

No one asked whether I survived.

By the time I reached the hospital, I could barely stand.

The nurse looked horrified.

"Where is your family?"

I laughed.

Then I cried.

"I buried them today."

After eighteen exhausting hours...

My twins were born.

A boy.

And a girl.

The doctors placed them against my chest simultaneously.

Tiny.

Fragile.

Perfect.

I named them...

Noah Daniel Hart.

And Lily Grace Hart.

Not Carter.

Hart.

My own family name.

The Carter name had died for me beside Daniel's grave.

Or so I believed.

Because twelve days later...

Someone knocked on my front door.

Vivian stood there wearing cream-colored designer clothes and carrying two luxury baby gift baskets.

Lucas smiled beside her.

For the first time in years.

"My grandchildren," Vivian said warmly.

"I've come to bring them home."

She had no idea...

Only one of those babies belonged to Daniel.

And I had the DNA results locked inside my bedroom safe.

I smiled for the first time since the funeral.

May you like

"Which one?"

The smile vanished from Vivian's face.
