CHAPTER 3 The Funeral Was Only the Beginning... The Real Killer Was Sitting at the Family Dinner Table

I never called the police.

Not immediately.

Instead...

I watched.

Lucas searched every drawer.

Every cabinet.

Every file.

Desperate.

Panicked.

He couldn't find the lockbox.

Because it wasn't inside the house anymore.

The lawyer had warned me.

"If anyone comes looking for these documents..."

"...they're afraid of what's inside."

He had been right.

The next morning...

Federal investigators arrived.

Not because I called them.

Because Daniel had.

Months before his death.

His attorney handed them an encrypted drive.

Daniel had secretly recorded every executive meeting inside Carter Holdings for nearly a year.

Hidden microphones.

Financial records.

Video.

Everything.

Millions of dollars disappeared through fake companies.

Stock manipulation.

Insurance fraud.

Bribes.

And every transfer required two signatures.

Lucas Carter.

And Vivian Carter.

Daniel hadn't died investigating strangers.

He had been investigating his own family.

The biggest surprise came forty-eight hours later.

The plane crash hadn't been an accident.

Someone had sabotaged the fuel system before takeoff.

The security footage had already been erased.

Except...

Daniel kept backups.

Lucas appeared inside the private hangar...

Thirty-seven minutes before departure.

Vivian was arrested while leaving a charity gala.

Still wearing pearls.

Still pretending innocence.

Lucas tried to flee the country.

He never reached the airport.

The FBI intercepted his private jet before it left the runway.

Months later...

I returned to Daniel's grave.

This time...

The sun was shining.

No rain.

No fear.

No contractions.

Only Noah and Lily laughing beside me in a double stroller.

I placed fresh white roses on the headstone.

"You protected us," I whispered.

"Even after you were gone."

A familiar voice interrupted behind me.

"I think he'd be proud."

Rachel stood there holding the little boy Daniel had once saved.

The child smiled at my twins.

Three children...

Connected by one extraordinary man.

Not by blood.

But by love.

As we walked away together...

I looked back one last time.

The man everyone thought had died leaving behind secrets...

Had actually left behind a roadmap exposing every lie.

And the family that abandoned a pregnant widow at a funeral...

Lost everything they tried so desperately to steal.

May you like

Because the greatest inheritance Daniel ever left wasn't his fortune.

It was the truth.
