Chapter 5 - THE CORPORATE RETALIATION“You Brought Clippers to a Gunfight.”The interrogation room at the Cook County Sheriff’s Department was cold and smelled of stale disinfectant.

Margaret sat at the metal table, her hands cuffed, her hair disheveled. Across from her sat Lead Detective Robert Thorne and my chief legal advisor, Sarah.

"I didn't steal anything!" Margaret spat, glaring at the two-way mirror, knowing I was standing right behind it. "That girl owes us! She married my son! Everything she earns belongs to this family!"

"Mrs. Vance," Detective Thorne said flatly, opening a thick yellow folder. "We aren't just looking at the wire transfers to Nevada. We uncovered a bank account opened in 2006 under your late husband’s name—four months after he died."

Margaret’s eyes widened in sheer terror. The color completely drained from her face.

"We ran the signatures through forensic analysis," Thorne continued, leaning forward. "You forged your deceased husband's signature to collect his life insurance payout, and then you used those funds to settle personal gambling debts before using the rest to set up Ryan’s trust fund. You've been committing insurance fraud for two decades."

Behind the mirror, I watched Margaret crumble. The arrogant, controlling woman who had shaved my head while I slept was now reduced to a trembling, frantic wreck.

Meanwhile, Ryan was spiraling into madness.

Desperate to hurt me and regain leverage, he decided to attack the one thing I cared about most: my career.

At 9:00 AM the following morning, Ryan walked into the corporate lobby of Apex Global Solutions wearing the same dirty clothes from the night before. He held his phone, prepared to upload a series of edited, private domestic photos to social media, accompanied by a post claiming I was an abusive, unstable wife who self-harmed by shaving her head.

He marched right up to the reception desk. "I demand to see CEO Arthur Vance right now! My wife is a fraud, and I am exposing her to the press!"

Before the receptionist could answer, the glass doors of the executive elevator opened.

Out stepped Arthur Vance, accompanied by three corporate attorneys and two armed security personnel.

"Mr. Vance," Arthur said, his voice laced with cold disdain. "We’ve been expecting you."

Ryan grinned maniacally. "Good! Then you know what kind of monster you hired! Look at these photos! She’s crazy! If you don't pay me a settlement of $2 million to keep quiet, I will send this to every news outlet in Chicago!"

Arthur didn't panic. He simply gestured to the corporate attorney beside him, who handed Ryan a legal document.

"This is a formal federal injunction," the attorney stated clearly. "And this is a criminal complaint for felony extortion."

Arthur leaned in close to Ryan. "Did you really think a woman who manages $200 million in regional corporate accounts wouldn't secure her personal devices? Elena turned over your full digital footprint to our cybersecurity department yesterday morning."

"What?" Ryan stammered, his blackmail plot crumbling around his ears.

"We have audio recordings from your home security network," Arthur said coldly. "We have the audio of your mother holding the clippers, telling Elena to 'know her place,' and your response agreeing with her. We also have your text messages planning to frame her for mental incompetence."

Ryan’s jaw dropped. He had forgotten that months ago, I had installed high-definition security cameras in the living room and hallways for home security.

"You are caught on tape committing domestic assault and conspiracy," Arthur said. "And right now, the police are waiting outside."

HOOK FOR CHAP 6: Ryan turned to run toward the doors, but as he hit the glass entry, two police officers grabbed him. As they forced him to the floor, his phone buzzed with an automated alert from the Probate Court: "ESTATE UPDATE: DNA ANALYSIS RESULTS CONFIRMED."
