Chapter 6 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST“The Dirt You Dug to Bury Me Just Became Your Own Grave.”The revelation hit the courtroom three weeks later like a megaton bomb.

The preliminary hearing for State of Illinois v. Margaret Vance & Ryan Vance drew a massive crowd of press and observers. I sat at the prosecution table, dressed in a sharp navy-blue suit, my shaved hair growing into a stunning, bold pixie cut that framed my sharp features.
Across the courtroom, Ryan and Margaret sat in orange jumpsuits, handcuffed and looking thoroughly defeated. They could no longer afford private council; they were assigned an exhausted public defender.
"Your Honor," Sarah Hastings declared, standing before the judge. "We submit into evidence document Exhibit 4B: the certified court-ordered DNA and lineage audit requested by the probate court regarding the Vance Estate."
The judge reviewed the paper, his eyebrows shooting up in astonishment. He looked over his glasses at Margaret.
"Mrs. Vance," the judge said, his voice heavy with disbelief. "Is it true that you hid the true parentage of your son from the court for thirty-four years?"
A gasp echoed through the gallery.
It turned out Ryan wasn't the biological son of Margaret’s late husband, the wealthy estate holder whose money Margaret had spent decades trying to claim. Ryan was the son of a low-level scam artist Margaret had been involved with before her marriage—a man who was currently serving a life sentence in state prison.
Margaret had passed Ryan off as her husband's heir to secure a massive family trust payout that was supposed to go to her husband’s legitimate relatives.
When Ryan heard this, he turned his head slowly toward his mother, his eyes filled with sheer horror.
"Mom...?" Ryan whispered, his voice shaking violently. "What is he talking about? Dad... Dad isn't my father?"
Margaret couldn't even look him in the eye. She buried her face in her cuffed hands, weeping silently.
"My entire life..." Ryan screamed, suddenly bursting out of his chair, his chains rattling loudly. "MY ENTIRE LIFE WAS A LIE?! YOU TOOK EVERYTHING FROM ME!"
"Order in the court!" the judge slammed his gavel repeatedly. "Bailiffs, restrain the defendant!"
Two bailiffs wrestled Ryan back down into his seat as he sobbed hysterically.
Everything Ryan had built his arrogance on—his sense of entitlement, his belief that he was an upper-class prince who was superior to his hard-working wife—was a complete illusion created by his mother's lifelong criminal deception.
He wasn't rich. He wasn't noble. He was the son of a convict, raised by a fraudster, surviving off the back of the woman he had tried to break.
I sat motionless, watching the total collapse of the monsters who had terrorized my sleep.
Sarah leaned over to me and whispered, "The state attorney is offering them a plea deal. Ten years for Margaret. Five years for Ryan for conspiracy and extortion. Or they can go to trial and face twenty."
I looked at Ryan, whose eyes met mine across the courtroom. He looked broken, hopeless, begging with his eyes for a shred of mercy.
I leaned toward Sarah and spoke into her ear.

"Tell the state attorney no deal," I said softly. "Take them to trial. I want maximum sentences on every single count."
HOOK FOR CHAP 7: That night, as I sat in my luxurious penthouse suite overlooking the Chicago skyline, my private investigator walked in and handed me a sealed envelope. "Elena... there's one more thing you need to see. Your mother-in-law didn't pick you to marry Ryan by accident. She knew who you were before you two ever met."
