Chapter 2 - THE WAR OF THE TITANS

The executive board room on the 80th floor of the Harrington Tower in downtown Chicago was silent. Outside, storm clouds hung low over Lake Michigan, casting a shadow across the glass walls.
Blake stood at the head of the long mahogany table, staring at three glossy photographic prints spread across the polished wood. They were high-resolution surveillance photos taken just three hours ago: Emma laughing at an outdoor cafe near Millennium Park, surrounded by the three boys.
"Their names are Leo, Ethan, and Lucas Winters," said Marcus Vance, Blake’s long-time private investigator and security chief. "They were born five years ago at a private hospital in Zurich, Switzerland. No father was listed on the birth certificates. Emma registered them under her maiden name."
Blake touched the edge of one photograph, his thumb gently tracing the small face of the boy holding a toy airplane. "And Julian Vance? What is his connection to her?"
Marcus hesitated, clearing his throat nervously. "After the divorce, Emma relocated to Switzerland. She was nearly bankrupt. She refused the divorce settlement you offered her, remember? She was living in a small apartment, working round-the-clock research shifts while pregnant. Julian Vance met her at an international clean-energy summit in Geneva. He funded her startup, Aether Technologies, and appointed her as the Chief Executive Officer."
Blake felt a fresh surge of agony. While he had been sitting in his Manhattan penthouse, convinced Emma had taken off with a lover, she had been working herself to the bone in a foreign country, carrying three of his children, surviving on sheer willpower.
"She built a multi-billion-dollar clean energy firm right under your nose, Blake," Marcus added quietly. "And Vance Global owns forty percent of her shares. They aren't just partners, Blake. Julian Vance is practically a father figure to those boys. They call him 'Uncle Julian'."
Uncle Julian.
The words burned like liquid fire in Blake's stomach.
"Not anymore," Blake said, his voice cold, flat, and brimming with lethal intent. "Issue an immediate emergency court injunction. File for full custody on the grounds of paternal concealment. I want emergency visitation rights granted within twenty-four hours."
"Blake, wait," warned Arthur Pendelton, Blake's chief legal strategist, stepping forward. "You need to tread carefully. Emma isn't the penniless woman you divorced five years ago. She is a globally recognized scientist backed by Julian Vance's legal fleet. If you drag this into a public custody war, the media will destroy you. The narrative will be simple: billionaire tycoon abandons pregnant wife, then uses his fortune to tear three toddlers away from their mother."
"I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE NARRATIVE!" Blake roared, slamming his fist down onto the mahogany table so hard that the coffee cups rattled. "THOSE ARE MY SONS! MY BLOOD! I missed their first steps, Arthur! I missed their first words! I missed five years of their lives because I was a blind, arrogant fool! I am not waiting another second!"
Before Arthur could reply, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Two armed security guards stepped back in surprise as a woman strode into the room, her high heels clicking loudly against the marble floor.
She wore a crisp white power suit, her golden-brown hair pulled back into a sleek, professional bun. She carried a leather briefcase, her head held high, radiating absolute authority.
It was Emma.
"You don't need to issue an injunction, Blake," Emma said calmly, stopping at the far end of the boardroom table. "I'm right here."
Blake froze. The anger that had been consuming him evaporated instantly, replaced by a desperate, pleading longing. "Emma... you came."
"I didn't come for you," she said, opening her briefcase and pulling out a thick, leather-bound folder. She slid it across the table toward him. "I came to put an end to this before you destroy what little respect I have left for you."
Blake reached out and opened the folder. Inside were official documents, stamped by the Swiss Supreme Court and the United States District Court.
"What is this?" he asked, his brow furrowing.
"It’s a legally binding protective order and a petition for restricted parental rights," Emma explained, her tone as measured as an iceberg. "I knew the moment you saw those boys, your ego would kick in. I knew you would try to use your legal team to bully me, just like you did five years ago."
"Bully you?" Blake's voice cracked. "Emma, I don't want to bully you! I want to know my children! I have a right to be their father!"
"You surrendered that right the night you kicked me out into the street!" Emma retorted, her calm façade slipping for a brief second, revealing the raw, burning pain beneath. "You called me a liar! You called me an unfaithful wife! I begged you to look at my phone, to see the messages from Dr. Klaus at the IVF clinic! You threw the phone against the wall and told me I disgusted you!"
Every word she spoke was a physical blow. Blake flinched, pulling back as if he had been struck.
"I was wrong," Blake whispered, his eyes pleading. "I was blind, crazy with jealousy, and stupid! I regret every single second of that night, Emma! If I could trade every dollar of my fortune to go back in time and undo it, I would! Please... just let me see them. Let me talk to them."
Emma looked at him, her expression softening for a fraction of a second, but then her jaw set firmly.
"They don't know who you are, Blake," she said softly. "To them, you are just a stranger from the airport who made their mother cry. I will not allow you to barge into their lives like a hurricane, wrecking their stability just to satisfy your guilty conscience."
She turned toward the door, but Blake rushed around the table, grabbing her wrist—not forcefully, but desperately.
"Emma, please," he begged, tears streaming down his face, completely abandoning his pride. "Give me a chance to make it right. One afternoon. Just give me one afternoon with them. If they don't want me... if they reject me... I will back off and handle this through the courts. But give me a chance to show them who I am."
Emma looked down at his hand on her wrist, then up into his frantic, heartbroken eyes. The silence stretched between them for what felt like an eternity.

Finally, she let out a slow, heavy sigh.
"Tomorrow afternoon," she said quietly. "At the Navy Pier park. Two hours. If you step out of line, if you try any legal tricks, or if you cause them even a moment of distress, I will take my sons on a private jet back to Switzerland, and you will never see them again."
