Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW OF THE PAST

CLICK-CLICK-CLICK-CLICK!
The rapid shutter of high-speed long-range cameras echoed across the street as three men in dark jackets burst out of the sedan, brandishing microphones and heavy video equipment.
"Mr. Harrington! Is it true those are your secret illegitimate children?"
"Emma Winters! Did you hide these boys to extort billions from Harrington Enterprises?"
"Is Julian Vance the real father, or are you playing both billionaires against each other?"
The sudden ambush was terrifying. The paparazzi converged on the small park like a swarm of vultures, flashing bright strobe lights directly into the children's faces.
Lucas began to scream in terror, burying his face into Emma's chest. Leo tried to punch one of the reporters who lunged forward with a microphone, while Ethan froze in absolute panic.
Blake’s protective instincts exploded into overdrive.
In a fraction of a second, he rose from the ground, grabbing the camera of the lead photographer and smashing it against the concrete curb with brutal force.
"GET BACK!" Blake roared, his voice echoing like thunder across the pier, his face contorted in terrifying fury. "GET AWAY FROM MY FAMILY OR I WILL PERSONALLY DESTROY EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU!"
Julian Vance reached Emma and the boys, using his body as a human shield to block the flashing lights, ushering them back toward the SUV. Blake stood at the perimeter, putting his body between the aggressively pushing journalists and his children, grabbing one photographer by the lapels and hurling him backward onto the grass.
"Get them out of here, Vance! GO!" Blake bellowed over his shoulder.
Julian didn't hesitate. He bundled Emma and the frightened boys into the back of the SUV, slammed the door, and sped away from the curb, tires screeching.
Blake stood alone on the pavement, his chest heaving, his hands bruised, surrounded by angry reporters shouting questions. Within two minutes, his security detail pulled up in two black Escalades, forcefully pushing the paparazzi back and clearing a path for Blake to enter his vehicle.
Inside the back seat of his SUV, Blake’s phone began ringing frantically. It was his corporate PR director, Sarah Jenkins.
"Blake! What the hell just happened at Navy Pier?" Sarah screamed through the speaker. "The news is breaking everywhere! TMZ, Bloomberg, Forbes! Pictures of you smashing a camera and shouting about your 'family' are trending worldwide! Harrington Enterprises stock is dropping like a stone!"
"I don't give a damn about the stock!" Blake snarled into the phone. "Who leaked our location? Who told the press we were at Navy Pier?"
"I don't know, Blake! But it gets worse," Sarah replied, her voice trembling. "Someone just sent an anonymous document package to the Wall Street Journal. It contains old financial records from five years ago—documents claiming that Emma embezzled twenty million dollars from Harrington Clean Energy right before your divorce!"
Blake's blood ran cold. "What? That's impossible! Emma never stole a single cent!"
"The documents have your digital signature on them, Blake," Sarah said softly. "The media is spinning it right now. They're saying you kicked her out because she was a corporate thief, and now she's using secret triplets to blackmail you for control of the company."
Blake slumped back against the leather seat, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead.
Someone was setting them up. Someone had orchestrated the divorce five years ago, manufactured the fake evidence that tore his marriage apart, and was now using their children to completely destroy both Harrington Enterprises and Emma's firm, Aether Technologies.
Suddenly, Blake's private phone buzzed with an incoming text message from an unknown, encrypted number.

He opened the message. It was a single line of text accompanied by a high-definition photograph of Emma’s SUV being tailed by a gray van:
“You threw her away five years ago, Blake. Now, she and your precious sons are going to pay for your arrogance. If you want them to survive the night, tell no one and come to the old warehouse on Pier 42 alone.”
