Chapter 6 - THE PRICE OF REDEMPTION

BANG!
A gunshot echoed violently through the steel rafters of the warehouse.
Blake braced for the impact, but the bullet didn't hit him.
Instead, Arthur gasped, his eyes wide with shock as a blood stain bloomed across his shoulder. He stumbled backward, dropping his silenced pistol onto the concrete floor.
At the far side of the warehouse, Julian Vance stood in the doorway, holding a tactical sidearm, flanked by five heavily armed Chicago SWAT officers.
"POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DON'T MOVE!" the officers screamed, their laser sights painting bright red dots across Arthur's chest.
Arthur panicked, reaching for his fallen gun with his uninjured hand, but a SWAT officer fired a non-lethal taser round, striking Arthur directly in the torso. Arthur collapsed onto the concrete, twitching wildly before being forcefully pinned and handcuffed by three officers.
Blake didn't look at Arthur. He didn't look at Julian.
He ran straight to Emma.
With trembling hands, he ripped the duct tape from her mouth and began frantically tearing at the heavy ropes binding her wrists.
"Emma! Emma, are you hurt? Did he touch you?" Blake sobbed, his hands shaking so violently he could barely untie the knots.
"I'm okay... I'm okay, Blake!" Emma cried, pulling her hands free and throwing her arms around his neck.
For the first time in five years, Blake held her in his arms. She was shaking, sobbing against his shoulder, clutching his navy sweater with desperate force. Blake buried his face into her hair, weeping openly, whispering apologies over and over like a mantra.
"I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry, Emma... I was such a fool... I should have believed you... I should have protected you..."
Julian Vance walked over slowly, lowering his weapon, watching the two of them with a complex expression of sadness and respect.
"How did you know to come here, Julian?" Blake asked, looking up, his face stained with tears.
"When the paparazzi ambushed us at the pier, I noticed a gray van tailing us," Julian explained quietly. "I had my security team track the plates. It led straight to Arthur Pendelton's private shell company. When Emma went missing from our secure hotel room an hour ago, I called the police commissioner directly."
Julian looked down at Emma, then at Blake. "He was going after the boys next, Blake. His men were heading to the safehouse where my guards were protecting Leo, Ethan, and Lucas."
Blake's blood ran cold. He stood up instantly, his eyes burning with lethal rage. He walked over to where Arthur was being dragged to his feet by two SWAT officers.
Blake grabbed Arthur by the collar, pulling the traitorous lawyer inches from his face.
"If you ever so much as breathe in the direction of my sons again," Blake whispered in a voice so cold it chilled the air in the room, "I will ensure you spend the rest of your natural life in a supermax facility where you will never see the light of day again. Do you understand me?"
Arthur, weak and bleeding, could only nod in terror.
As the police led Arthur away in handcuffs, Emma walked up beside Blake. The adrenaline was fading, leaving behind the heavy, suffocating truth of everything they had lost over the past five years.
"He stole five years from us, Blake," Emma said softly, her eyes glistening with fresh tears as she looked out at the pouring rain. "Five years of birthdays, first steps, holidays... everything."
Blake turned to her, his heart breaking all over again. "He might have started the lie, Emma... but I was the one who believed it. I was the one who let my ego destroy our family. The blame rests on my shoulders."

Emma looked at him for a long, silent moment. "What do we do now?"
"Now," Blake said, taking her hand gently, "we go back to our sons."
