Chapter 1 - THE CRUMBLING FACADEThe air in the kitchen turned instantly sub-zero.

Camille didn’t flinch. For three terrifying seconds, her face remained perfectly calm—a masterclass in high-society emotional control. Then, the mask cracked. The sweet, cultured woman Darian had courted vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating strategist whose eyes burned with venom.
“You’re taking the word of the help over mine, Darian?” Camille hissed, her voice dangerously low. She cast a scathing look at Mrs. Okafor, who stood her ground near the island. “A maid who fears losing her relevancy in this house? A woman who enables Layla’s hysterical tantrums?”
“Do not address her like that,” Darian warned, stepping directly into Camille’s line of sight. His blood was boiling, but a terrifying clarity was taking over his mind. “Mrs. Okafor has been family since long before you entered this house. And if you think Layla’s trauma is a ‘hysterical tantrum,’ you are even more twisted than I realized.”
Camille chuckled—a dry, lifeless sound. She smoothed the front of her pristine beige silk blouse. “I did what any mother-to-be with an ounce of discipline would do. That child is out of control, Darian! She cries at the drop of a hat, she clutters this architectural masterpiece with garbage plastic toys, and she clings to the memory of a dead woman like a crutch! Sophia is gone! But you... you’d rather let a three-year-old run your life than build a empire with me!”
“Sophia was her mother!” Darian roared, slamming his fist onto the marble counter. The sound cracked through the silent mansion like a gunshot. “And you told my baby that her mother died because she made too much noise? How twisted do you have to be to say that to a child?!”
Camille scoffed, crossing her arms. “I gave her a reality check. Life isn't a fairy tale, Darian. She needs to grow up.”
“Get out,” Darian said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper.
Camille’s eyes widened slightly, her calculated posture faltering for a fraction of a second. “What did you say?”
“I said, get out of my house,” Darian repeated, pointing toward the double glass front doors. “The wedding is canceled. We are done. Pack your things and leave before I have security throw you onto the pavement.”
A sinister smile spread across Camille’s face. It was not the smile of a defeated woman; it was the smile of someone who had just played a hidden card.
“Oh, Darian, darling...” She stepped closer, reaching into her designer handbag and pulling out a glossy black leather folder. She tossed it onto the marble island between them. “You seem to forget who holds the purse strings to your latest venture. You think you can just throw me out?”
Darian looked down at the folder. “What is this?”
“Open it,” Camille purred, resting her chin on her hand. “That is the signed acquisition agreement for Vance Global's newest tech patent. The one your entire company’s valuation hinges on. My father’s firm owns fifty-one percent of the holding company. If you break this engagement today, I liquidate the assets by noon tomorrow.”
Darian felt the oxygen leave his lungs. He stared at the documents. It was true. In his eagerness to scale his firm after Sophia’s death, he had accepted massive capital injections from Camille’s family enterprise.
“You set this up,” Darian realized, a wave of nausea washing over him. “From the very beginning.”
“I set up my future,” Camille corrected coldly. “So here are your options, Mr. Vance: You publicly apologize to me, you send Layla to a boarding school in Switzerland by the end of the month where she can be properly managed, and we proceed with the wedding as scheduled... or you lose your company, your fortune, and everything your beloved late wife helped you build.”
She leaned in, her whisper burning against his ear. “Choose carefully, Darian. The world is watching.”
Before Darian could respond, a small, breathless sob rang out from the kitchen doorway.

Darian whipped his head around. Standing at the threshold, holding her tattered elephant plushie Ellie tightly against her chest, was Layla. Her little eyes were wide with terror, filled with fresh tears as she looked from her father to the cold, smiling woman standing beside him.
“Daddy...” Layla whimpered, her tiny voice trembling. “Is... is it my fault again?”
