Chapter 4 - SECRETS IN THE DARKThe emergency room at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital was humming with quiet efficiency when Darian burst through the double doors, holding Layla against his chest.

Within minutes, Dr. Elizabeth Hayes—a sharp, compassionate woman in her late forty’s with silver-streaked hair—had moved them into a private, secure room on the pediatric floor.

“Darian, talk to me,” Elizabeth said, checking Layla’s vital signs while the small girl sat quietly on the examination bed, nursing a juice box. “Marcus called ahead. He told me CPS is being leveraged by Camille Dupont. Is this true?”

“She’s trying to destroy us, Liz,” Darian said, his hands trembling as he ran them through his hair. “She framed me for neglect to take Layla away and force me into maintaining our corporate merger. She told Layla that Sophia died because Layla was too loud!”

Elizabeth’s hands froze over her stethoscope. Her face flushed with absolute fury. “She said what to this baby?”

“It gets worse,” Darian said, leaning against the wall, utterly exhausted. “Camille locked all of Sophia’s old belongings—the toys, the photo albums, the letters—in the basement. She’s been trying to erase my wife’s existence from Layla’s life.”

Elizabeth turned to look at Layla, who was quietly drawing with a purple crayon on the medical paper lining the bed. The little girl drew three figures: a large man, a tiny girl, and a faded white figure with angel wings floating above them.

Elizabeth swallowed hard, her eyes gleaming with tears. She walked over to her desk, unlocked a lower drawer, and pulled out a thick yellow envelope.

“Darian,” Elizabeth said softly. “There’s something you need to know. Something I promised Sophia I wouldn’t tell you unless things got dangerous.”

Darian felt the room swing. “What are you talking about?”

“Sophia didn’t just die from a sudden heart arrhythmia, Darian,” Elizabeth said, her voice dropping to a whisper as she guarded the door. “Two weeks before she passed away, Sophia came to my office. She was terrified.”

Darian’s heart stopped. “Terrified of what?”

“She was being stalked,” Elizabeth revealed, handing the envelope to Darian. “Someone was sending her anonymous letters, threatening to expose a financial secret from her past if she didn’t leave you. She was having severe panic attacks, which aggravated her underlying cardiac condition. She gave me this folder and told me to keep it safe in case anything happened to her.”

Darian’s hands shook uncontrollably as he opened the yellow folder. Inside were printouts of emails, photos, and financial transactions.

As he flipped through the pages, his eyes widened in horror.

connected to the sender’s IP address was an offshore account registered under the name: DUPONT HOLDINGS INC.

“Camille...” Darian breathed out, the world spinning around him. “Camille was stalking Sophia before she died?”

“Not just stalking her,” Elizabeth said grimly. “Look at the date on that last email, Darian.”

Darian looked. The date was October 14th—the night Sophia went into cardiac arrest.

The email read: “If you don’t leave Darian by tomorrow, I will make sure your daughter suffers the consequences.”

Darian fell back into a chair, holding his head in his hands as a gut-wrenching sob escaped his throat. Sophia hadn’t died from an unpredictable medical tragedy—she had been terrified to death by the very woman Darian had brought into his home to replace her.

Suddenly, the red emergency light above the hospital door began to flash, and a loud alarm echoed down the corridor.

The door burst open, and Marcus rushed in, his tie loose, his face pale as paper.

“Darian! We have to go NOW!” Marcus yelled.

“What’s happening?” Darian demanded, standing up instantly.

“Judge Miller just issued an emergency warrant for Layla’s custody!” Marcus said frantically, looking out into the hallway. “And he didn’t send regular CPS officers. He authorized the Sheriff’s Department! They’re in the lobby right now, claiming you abducted Layla!”

From the end of the hallway, heavy footsteps echoed against the tile floor.

“Darian Vance!” a stern male voice shouted through a megaphone. “Step out of the room with your hands visible! You are under arrest for parental abduction!”
