Chapter 3 - THE WEB OF LIES“That is a complete and utter lie!” Darian shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. “Camille is the one who locked her toys away! Camille is the one abusing my daughter!”

“Mr. Vance, please lower your voice,” the lead police officer said, keeping his hand near his belt. “We are required by law to investigate every emergency report involving minor children.”

Marcus stepped between Darian and the officers, whipping out his legal credential badge. “Officers, I am Marcus Vance, chief legal counsel for Vance Global and uncle to the child. This report is a fraudulent, malicious retaliation tactic. My client canceled his engagement to Ms. Dupont just hours ago.”

The CPS worker looked unimpressed. “Be that as it may, Mr. Vance, the allegations state that Mr. Darian Vance is mentally unfit due to unmanaged grief following his wife’s death, making him a danger to the child’s psychological welfare. We need to conduct an immediate temporary safety evaluation. Where is Layla?”

From the kitchen doorway, Mrs. Okafor stepped out, holding Layla behind her skirt. Layla peeked out, seeing the bright yellow badges and high boots of the officers, and began to tremble violently.

“Daddy!” she cried, her voice rising in panic. “Daddy, don't let them take Ellie! Don't let them put me in the dark box!”

Darian felt something shatter inside him. He didn’t care about the police, the CPS worker, or the law in that second—he dropped to his knees in front of Layla, wrapping his arms around her tightly. “Nobody is taking you anywhere, baby! I promise you, nobody is touch you!”

“Mr. Vance, step away from the child,” the CPS officer ordered sternly, taking a step forward. “Her elevated level of terror suggests a highly volatile home environment.”

“She’s terrified because you walked into her home with guns!” Marcus snapped at the officers. “If you force an emergency removal without a court order signed by a judge, I will file an injunction against your department before the sun sets today!”

The lead officer looked at the CPS worker, hesitating. “Sarah, do we have a signed judicial warrant?”

Sarah Jenkins scowled, looking at her tablet. “The emergency ex-parte order is currently being processed by Judge Miller. It should be signed within two hours.”

Judge Miller.

The name struck Darian like a physical blow. Judge Harrison Miller was a key board member on the Dupont Family Foundation. Camille had orchestrated this entire trap with surgical precision. She was using her family’s political connections to strip Darian of his daughter before he could fight back.

“We have two hours,” Marcus whispered urgently to Darian while the CPS worker argued on her phone in the foyer. “Darian, you need to get Layla out of here. If Judge Miller signs that order, they will take her to a state foster facility while the investigation takes place.”

“Where can I take her?” Darian whispered, his chest heaving. “They’ll put out an Amber Alert if I run!”

“Not if you take her to a certified medical facility for a formal psychological assessment,” Marcus said quickly, his eyes darting toward the officers. “If Layla is admitted under doctor’s care for stress evaluation before the order is signed, CPS cannot legally remove her without a secondary medical review. Take her to Dr. Elizabeth Hayes at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. She was Sophia’s close friend.”

Darian looked down at Layla. Her tear-stained face was buried in his chest, her small hands clutching his suit jacket as if it were her only lifeline.

“Mrs. Okafor,” Darian said quietly, turning to the nanny. “Pack a bag for Layla. Everything she loves. Especially her mother’s items in the basement.”

“I’m on it, Mr. Darian,” Mrs. Okafor said, her face set in determination as she rushed downstairs.

Darian stood up, turning to face the officers. His tone was no longer frantic; it was pure, cold composure.

“Officer, my daughter is experiencing severe distress,” Darian announced loudly. “I am exercising my right as her legal legal guardian to seek immediate pediatric emergency medical care. We are leaving for St. Jude’s Hospital now.”

The CPS worker snapped her head up. “You can’t leave! We are waiting for the court order!”

“Until that order is signed and served, you have no legal right to detain us,” Marcus stated flatly, placing his hand over the CPS worker’s phone camera as she tried to record them. “Touch my client, and I will personally file false imprisonment charges against you individually.”

Darian grabbed Layla and her small duffel bag, rushing out through the side garage door into his SUV.

As the heavy garage door rolled up, Darian saw a sleek black sedan parked across the street. Behind the tinted driver's side glass sat Camille, holding a glass of iced coffee, watching him with a calm, predatory smile.

She raised her glass toward him in a silent toast.

Darian slammed his foot on the accelerator, his tires screeching as he tore down the driveway, desperate to save his daughter from the monster he had almost married.
