Chapter 8 - THE SHATTERED DYNASTYCatchy Title: THE FALL OF AN EMPIRE: ARTHRUR’S FINAL HOURS BEHIND BARS!

Inside the maximum-security holding facility on the outskirts of the city, the fluorescent lights hummed with a monotonous, maddening drone.

Arthur Vance sat on the edge of a steel-frame cot in cell 402, his head in his hands. The expensive black suit had been replaced by a coarse, orange prison jumpsuit that felt like sandpaper against his skin. His clean-shaven face now carried a stubble of graying beard, and his dark wavy hair was unwashed and wild.

The small television mounted high on the concrete wall was turned to the global financial news network.

“...and in a stunning development this morning,” the news anchor’s voice echoed sharply through the concrete block walls, “Bernstorff-Vance International has released a massive trove of internal financial documents implicating dozens of global executives and political figures in a multi-billion-dollar money laundering ring. Federal prosecutors confirm that former CEO Arthur Vance, currently awaiting trial, faces up to forty-five years in federal prison...”

Arthur didn't look up at the screen. He didn't have to. He could already feel the walls closing in.

The door to the visiting booth at the end of the concrete corridor buzzed open. Heavy footsteps echoed against the floor—not the hurried shuffle of inmates, but the measured, deliberate stride of someone who owned the building.

Arthur raised his head slowly.

Standing on the other side of the reinforced glass partition wasn't a lawyer. It wasn't a federal prosecutor.

It was Clara.

She wore a simple, elegant black wool coat, her blonde hair neatly tied back in her signature bun, though the white housekeeper's apron was gone, replaced by the understated luxury of a woman who wielded absolute power.

Arthur staggered up from his cot, walking unsteadily toward the glass partition. He grabbed the heavy steel receiver hanging on the wall and pressed it to his ear. With shaking hands, Clara picked up the matching receiver on the other side.

"Did you come to gloat?" Arthur’s voice was cracked, raw, and barely recognizable.

"I didn't come to gloat, Arthur," Clara said, her voice coming through the small speaker grille with crystal clarity. "I came to deliver a message from Eleanor."

Arthur’s grip on the plastic receiver tightened until his knuckles turned white. "She wants more? What else is left? You took the company, you took my freedom, you took my name!"

"She didn't take your name, Arthur. You stained it all on your own," Clara replied without a trace of malice—which made it infinitely more terrifying. "She simply wanted you to know that Lily asked about you this morning."

Arthur’s breath hitched. A flicker of raw, desperate paternal instinct flared in his chest. "Lily... what did she say? Does she want to see me?"

Clara stared at him through the glass, her eyes completely devoid of warmth.

"She looked at the empty courtyard from the second-floor balcony," Clara said slowly, every word landing like a hammer blow. "She patted Rex on the head, and she asked me: 'Clara, why did the bad man in the black suit pretend to be my father for so long?'"

Arthur staggered backward, the plastic receiver slipping from his trembling fingers to dangle by its coiled black cord against the concrete wall.

Clang. Clang. Clang.

The sound of the receiver swinging back and forth echoed in the tiny cell like a ticking clock running out of time.
