Chapter 1 - THE BLINKING RED LIGHT

Catchy Title: "The Classroom Door Was Locked, But What Lay Beneath the Wool Was Not Human..."The silence inside Kindergarten Room 104 was so thick you could hear the hum of the fluorescent lights. Outside, the muffled laughter of children playing on the scorching Texas asphalt faded into the background.

I held my breath as I gently, slowly peeled back the thick blue wool of Leo’s turtleneck.

My mind had prepared for the worst—bruises, scars, the tragic evidence of a broken home. But what my eyes actually locked onto made my blood freeze instantly. It defied all logic.

Fused directly to the nape of Leo’s five-year-old neck was a sleek, metallic, matte-black collar. It wasn't jewelry. It wasn't a toy. It was embedded into his skin, seamless, with tiny silver filaments spreading out like veins beneath his flesh. And right in the center of the device, a tiny LED light pulsed with a rhythmic, hypnotic crimson glow.

Beneath the light, a digital micro-display read: 00:41:12

A countdown. Forty-one minutes and twelve seconds remaining.

"Leo..." I whispered, my voice trembling so violently I could barely form the word. "What... what is this?"

Leo didn’t cry. He looked at me with those unnaturally calm, ancient eyes. "Daddy said if the light turns green, I can go home. If it turns solid red... I have to run very fast."

My hand flew to my mouth. My maternal and professional instincts slammed into overdrive. I ran to my desk and snatched my phone. I didn't dial 911. My brother, Marcus, was a lead cybersecurity investigator for the federal government. He was the only one who wouldn't think I was losing my mind.

The phone rang twice before he picked up. "Claire? I'm in a meeting—"

"Marcus, listen to me very carefully," I interrupted, my voice a panicked hiss. "I have a student. A five-year-old. There is a metallic device fused to his neck. It has a digital countdown. It’s at forty minutes."

There was a dead silence on the other end of the line. I could hear the sound of Marcus scraping his chair back, rushing out of his meeting. "Claire, describe it. Exactly."

As I described the silver filaments and the matte-black casing, Marcus’s breathing grew incredibly shallow.

"Oh my god," Marcus whispered. "Claire, you need to evacuate that room right now. Do not touch the device. Do not let anyone near him. That’s not a tracker. It's a prototype bio-kinetic lock. If that countdown hits zero, it doesn't just track him—it detonates a localized EMP and localized neurotoxin to wipe the surrounding area."

Before I could even process the horror of his words, a heavy, aggressive knock rattled the locked classroom door.

The doorknob turned violently. Someone was trying to force their way in.
