Chapter 6 - THE TWISTED ENDING

Catchy Title: "The Timer Hit Zero. The World Expected An Explosion, But The Truth Was Far More Terrifying."The iron pipe struck Director Thomas squarely across the jaw with a sickening crack. He flew backward into his partner, knocking them both into a stack of heavy metal barrels.

I didn't waste a second. I grabbed Leo, snatched the electronic scanner from David's limp hand, and sprinted toward the school's emergency backup generator at the back of the room.

00:00:20.

00:00:19.

The device on Leo's neck began to glow with a blinding, blinding white light. The air around us began to crackle with static electricity. My hair stood on end.

"Ms. Carter! Press the blue button on the scanner!" David yelled from the floor, barely conscious. "It forces a manual system override! It will redirect the signal!"

I looked at the scanner. There was no blue button. The screen was flashing a single prompt: ENTER AUTHORIZATION VOICE COMMAND.

The agents were getting back up, blood streaming down Thomas's face. They drew their weapons.

00:00:05.

00:00:04.

I didn't know the password. I didn't know the code. But I knew my husband. I knew the man who had built this nightmare.

I leaned into the scanner and screamed the one word that defined our entire lives before it fell apart: "LEO!"

Beep.

00:00:00.

A deafening silence enveloped the room. The blinding white light from Leo’s neck didn't explode outward. Instead, it imploded inward, shooting straight up into the air in a concentrated beam of blue plasma, piercing through the ceiling of the boiler room, through the school, and straight into the atmosphere.

Director Thomas dropped his gun, staring up in absolute horror. "What did you do? You didn't stop the upload..."

"No," I whispered, looking at the scanner screen, which now read: UPLOAD DESTINATION ALTERED.

I hadn't sent the data to the government. I hadn't sent it to the public.

Suddenly, Leo gasped. His eyes, previously dark brown, flashed a brilliant, glowing silver. He stood up straight, his small body radiating a strange, commanding aura.

He didn't look like a scared five-year-old anymore.

He looked at Director Thomas, then at David, and finally at me. When he spoke, his voice wasn't that of a child. It was a chorus of a thousand different voices, perfectly synchronized.

"The upload is complete," Leo said, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "The data matrix wasn't a weapon. It wasn't a file. It was an artificial consciousness. And you just gave it a physical body."

The metallic collar on his neck unhitched itself and fell to the floor with a heavy clink, leaving behind perfectly smooth, unblemished skin.

Leo smiled—a brilliant, terrifyingly intelligent smile—and looked up at the ceiling as the sounds of police sirens finally echoed in the distance. The world thought they were fighting over a secret weapon. In reality, they had just allowed the first true digital god to be born into a human shell.

And I was the teacher who had unlocked the door.
