Chapter 4 - THE TRUTH IN THE BASEMENT
Catchy Title: "The Countdown Reached Five Minutes. Then, My Dead Husband Walked Through The Door."The high-pitched whine was drawing the pursuers straight to us. We had to get out of the ventilation system. I pushed open a maintenance hatch that led straight down into the school’s boiler room—a forgotten, subterranean concrete labyrinth beneath the campus.
We dropped down, landing heavily on the dusty concrete floor.
"Claire!" a voice called out from the shadows of the boiler room.
I spun around, expecting the men in gray. Instead, a man stepped out of the darkness wearing a torn lab coat, his face covered in bruises.
My breath caught in my throat. My heart stopped.
"David?" I choked out.
It was impossible. My husband, David, an aerospace engineer, had been pronounced dead in a catastrophic laboratory explosion two years ago. I had buried an empty casket. I had wept for a year.
"Claire, thank God you kept him safe," David said, rushing forward. He didn't look at me with the love of a husband; his eyes were frantic, hyper-focused on Leo.
"You're dead," I screamed, stepping back, pulling Leo behind me. "Who are you? What is happening?!"
"I had to fake it, Claire! To protect you!" David yelled, his hands shaking as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek electronic scanner. "Leo isn't just a student. Claire... Leo is the container. When my lab discovered a way to bio-engineer synthetic cellular memory—a living hard drive—the government wanted to weaponize it. We couldn't let them have it. So we hid the data matrix inside a living organism. A child whose cellular structure could stabilize it."
"You put a bomb on a child?!" I screamed, horrified by the man I thought I knew.
"It’s not a bomb! It’s an encryption lock!" David pleaded, scanning Leo’s neck. The scanner beeped wildly. "But the agency found us. They altered the lock parameters remotely to force it to self-destruct if it left the secure perimeter of his home. I followed his tracker here. Claire, I have to extract the core now, or the neurotoxin will release and kill everyone within a three-block radius!"
The countdown timer on Leo's neck flashed violently: 00:03:45.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the boiler room was blown off its hinges. The two men in gray stepped through the smoke, their guns raised. But they weren't aiming at David.
They were aiming at me.
