Chapter 8 - The Price of Freedom

The high-speed pursuit across the rain-slicked coastal highway was a blur of flashing sirens, screeching tires, and blinding headlights. Gabriel handled the wheel of the hijacked armored Mercedes with terrifying precision, drifting around hairpin turns along the cliffside road while Marino’s remaining SUVs slammed their bumpers against their rear quarter-panel, trying to pit-maneuver them off the precipice into the dark, churning ocean far below.

In the passenger seat, Clara gripped the armrest so hard her knuckles turned chalk-white, yet her other hand remained firmly clamped around the silver-bound ledger and her burner phone.

"Your escape route sucks, Gabriel!" Clara shouted over the howling wind and screeching metal as another Marino SUV clipped their side mirror.

"It builds character," Gabriel muttered, his dark eyes fixed on the winding road ahead. He slammed his foot down on the gas, the supercharged engine roaring as they rocketed past the city limits toward the abandoned naval shipyard at the edge of the peninsula.

The Mercedes fishtailed violently as they tore through the rusted iron gates of the shipyard, sliding across an oil-stained tarmac before coming to a screeching halt inside a massive, corrugated steel warehouse. Gabriel killed the headlights instantly, plunging them into near-total darkness, save for the pale moonlight filtering through the shattered skylights overhead.

The sound of pursuing engines echoed outside, pulling up hard against the warehouse exterior.

"Stay in the car," Gabriel ordered, reaching for his spare magazine.

"No," Clara snapped, unlatching her door and stepping out onto the oil-slicked concrete. "I'm done taking orders from you, Gabriel. We end this right here."

Before Gabriel could intercept her, the massive metal rolling doors of the warehouse were blown open with a deafening charge. Smoke billowed into the cavernous space as Don Salvatore Marino strode through the haze, flanked by four elite enforcers, his shotgun leveled directly at Clara's chest.

"End of the line, little girl," Salvatore sneered, stepping over a rusted iron beam. "Hand over the ledger, and I'll make your execution quick. Costa, drop your weapon or she dies right now."

Gabriel stepped out from the driver's side, his pistol lowered casually at his side. He didn't look worried. He looked bored.

"Salvatore, you really should have checked your rear-view mirror before you left the docks," Gabriel said smoothly.

Before Salvatore could process the warning, the shadows above the gantry crane shifted. A soft thip-thip-thip echoed through the cavern.

All four of Salvatore’s armed enforcers dropped instantly, silenced slugs piercing their body armor with lethal accuracy. Marcus stood atop the steel rafters, his sniper rifle smoking in the damp air.

Salvatore spun around in sheer panic, his shotgun shaking as he realized he had walked straight into a trap. "What—what is this?!"

Clara walked forward slowly, her heels clicking against the concrete floor. She didn't look like a terrified secretary anymore. She looked like the true architect of the underworld. She reached into her clutch, pulled out the burner phone, and pressed a single button on the screen.

A red LED light began to blink furiously on a briefcase sitting atop a nearby crate—a briefcase wired directly into the syndicate's master financial server.

"This," Clara said coldly, stopping three feet away from the trembling mafia don, "is your audit, Salvatore."
