Chapter 10 - The Final Ledger (The Unexpected Twist)

Three months later, the sun beat down brilliantly over the crystal-clear waters of the Amalfi Coast, warming the cobblestones of a secluded cliffside villa far away from the blood-soaked streets and damp fog of the city.
Clara Bennett stood on the white stone balcony, sipping a cup of freshly brewed espresso, her laptop resting on the iron table beside her. She wore a simple linen sundress, the severe chignon and heavy corporate blazers permanently replaced by an effortless, sun-kissed freedom. Down below, the Mediterranean Sea crashed against the jagged rocks in a soothing, rhythmic cadence.
She opened her laptop and clicked on an encrypted international news feed.
The headline flashing across the screen read: COSTA-MARINO SYNDICATE COLLAPSE: MASSIVE FEDERAL INDICTMENTS SWEEP UNDERWORLD ELITE.
Below the fold, another article caught her eye: MYSTERIOUS ANONYMOUS BENEFACTOR TRANSFERS 400 MILLION DOLLARS TO GLOBAL ORPHANAGE AND MARITIME CONSERVATION TRUST.
Clara let out a soft, genuine laugh, shaking her head. Gabriel had kept his word. They had liquidated every last cent of the dirty money, washing the blood off their hands and laundering their escape through a labyrinth of legitimate global charities and offshore sovereign trusts that even the FBI couldn't trace back to them.
Heavy, familiar footsteps echoed across the balcony tile. A pair of warm, strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her flush against a solid chest, while a familiar cedarwood scent filled her senses.
"You're reading the news again," Gabriel murmured into her neck, pressing a soft kiss against her skin. He looked entirely different without his tailored suits—wearing an open-linen shirt, looking relaxed, dangerous, and completely at peace.
"I'm just checking our portfolio," Clara smiled, leaning back against him and resting her hands over his arms. "Marcus sent an encrypted text from Zurich this morning. The final asset transfer cleared."
"Good," Gabriel said, resting his chin on her shoulder. "Because I didn't spend three months dodging federal task forces and dismantling a criminal empire just to watch you manage spreadsheets on our honeymoon."
Clara turned around in his arms, wrapping her hands loosely around his neck, a playful spark dancing in her dark eyes. "Careful, Mr. Costa. Just because we're retired doesn't mean I don't still know all your passwords."

Gabriel chuckled, a rich, genuine sound that belonged only to her. He leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, lingering kiss that tasted of salt air, espresso, and absolute freedom.
As the Mediterranean sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of gold and crimson, Clara finally closed the laptop for good. The executive assistant was gone. The mafia boss had lost his empire. And together, out of the ashes of their old lives, they had built a future nobody saw coming.
