Chapter 10 - THE FINAL LEDGERThe silence in the penthouse was absolute. The city lights below seemed to blur into a meaningless smear of neon against the dark glass of the forty-fifth floor.

Sophia’s hands trembled against the cold marble of the kitchen counter. Every drop of blood drained from her face.
"Declan..." she whispered, her voice cracking. "I can explain—"
"Can you?" Declan interrupted, taking a slow step closer. He didn't sound angry. He didn't sound betrayed. He sounded like a man who had known the truth from the very first night she collapsed in his library.
"You planted yourself in my house," Declan continued, his voice dropping into that low, gravelly rasp. "You fainted on cue. You leaked the exact data points I needed to eliminate Vance, letting me do your federal government's dirty work in wiping out the entire Chicago Commission in one clean sweep."
Sophia stared at him, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She backed away until her hips hit the edge of the counter. "You knew? From the beginning?"
"You're a terrible actress, Sophia," Declan said, stopping two feet away from her, his tall, imposing frame blocking all exits. "No maid holds a multi-million-dollar ledger in her skirt lining unless she was trained by the FBI's forensic intelligence division."
"Then why didn't you kill me?" she cried out, the fear finally breaking through her professional composure. "Why give me the job? Why bring me here?"
Declan reached out. His large, scarred hand gently cupped her jaw, his thumb brushing across her trembling lower lip with startling tenderness.
"Because federal intelligence wants to bring down my empire," Declan whispered, leaning in until his lips brushed her ear, "and you realized, somewhere around month three of dusting my bookshelves, that the empire wasn't the monster you were told it was."
He pulled back, looking deep into her wide, terrified eyes.
"The feds think you're working for them, Sophia," Declan said with a dark, humorless smile. "And Vance thought he was working for New York. But at the end of the day..."
He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out the secure federal dossier, and dropped it onto the gas burner, striking a match and watching the federal secrets catch fire, curl, and turn to ash in seconds.
"...you belong to me."
Sophia looked at the burning ashes, then up at the most dangerous man in Chicago. The empire outside was burning, the federal trap was snapping shut, and her entire life as an undercover agent had just been reduced to smoke.

She didn't run.
Instead, she raised her hand, wrapped her fingers tightly around the lapel of his white dress shirt, and pulled him down into a fierce, consuming kiss—proving once and for all that the empire hadn't fallen at all. It had simply found its true queen.
