Chapter 8 - THE TOWER OF GLASS AND BLOODSix months later, the Walsh Tower loomed over downtown Chicago like a monolith of dark glass and steel, piercing the gray clouds like a spear.

From the corner office on the forty-fifth floor, the view of Lake Michigan was breathtaking. The city stretched out below like a complex circuit board of flashing lights, moving cars, and endless power dynamics.

Sophia Reed stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, wearing a tailored midnight-blue pantsuit, her hair pinned back in a sleek, professional twist. On her desk sat a sleek titanium terminal displaying the real-time global tracking of Walsh Logistics cargo ships across the Atlantic and Pacific.

The heavy oak door swung open without a knock.

Declan walked in, rolling up his sleeves, looking like a man who owned the city because, quite frankly, he did. He dropped a heavy manila folder onto her desk.

"New York is making a move," Declan said casually, pouring himself a cup of black coffee from the side bar. "The Outfit is trying to muscle in on our port authority contracts in Gary, Indiana."

Sophia didn't look up from her terminal. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, bringing up a complex financial schematic on the main screen. "Let them try. I already froze their primary liquidity accounts through three shell companies in Zurich. By tomorrow morning, they won't even be able to afford the gasoline for their delivery trucks."

Declan stopped pouring his coffee. He turned around, leaning against the marble counter, and stared at her with a mixture of profound respect and amusement.

"You're becoming ruthless, Sophia," Declan noted, taking a slow sip. "The Commission is starting to call you the Ice Queen of the Gold Coast."

"I learned from the best," she replied, finally looking up, a sharp, confident smile playing on her lips.

Declan walked over to her desk, stopping just inches away. The air between them crackled with the same electric, unspoken tension that had filled the east wing guest suite six months ago. The power dynamic had shifted completely; she was no longer the maid he carried upstairs. She was his equal, his strategist, and the only person in Chicago he trusted with his life.

"Dinner tonight?" Declan asked quietly, his pale blue eyes locked onto hers. "At the penthouse. No guards. No ledgers."

Sophia tilted her head, her smile turning dangerous. "Only if you cook, Mr. Walsh. I've seen your kitchen skills, and honestly, your scrambled eggs are a federal offense."

Declan’s lips curved into a slow, wicked grin. "It’s a date."
