Chapter 9 - THE GHOST IN THE MACHINEThe penthouse atop the Walsh Tower was a sanctuary of glass, leather, and minimalist luxury. The city lights twinkled below like fallen stars, casting a warm, amber glow across the living room.

Declan stood by the stainless-steel kitchen island, actually wearing an apron over his black dress shirt, expertly flipping a ribeye steak in a cast-iron skillet.

Sophia sat at the marble counter, swirling a glass of high-end Barolo, watching him with a quiet, contented smile.

"You know," Sophia said softly over the sizzle of the steak, "six months ago, I thought my life was completely over. I thought I was going to die in a tiny apartment with fourteen days of past-due rent and a dead sister's ghost."

Declan turned off the burner, plating the steak with clinical precision before walking over and setting it down in front of her. He didn't sit across from her; he pulled the stool right beside hers, his shoulder brushing hers.

"Your sister’s ghost is laid to rest," Declan said quietly, his voice carrying an uncharacteristic warmth. "Vance’s remaining associates were rounded up in Miami this morning. The audit is clean."

"Thanks to you," Sophia murmured.

"Thanks to us," Declan corrected, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His fingers brushed her cheek, lingering for a moment against her skin.

Suddenly, the secure terminal on the kitchen counter chimed—a sharp, high-pitched alarm that had not sounded once since Sophia took over the logistics division.

Sophia froze. She slid off the stool in a fraction of a second, walking over to the glowing screen.

A single encrypted data packet was pinging from an unknown IP address deep within the federal servers in Washington, D.C.

She tapped the screen, decrypting the firewall.

A document flashed onto the monitor. It wasn't a financial ledger. It wasn't a shipping manifest.

It was a classified federal dossier stamped with the seal of the Department of Justice, dated seven days ago.

And right at the top, beneath a photograph of Declan Walsh and Sophia Reed walking out of the federal courthouse, was a single headline:

OPERATION MIDAS: THE CONTROL OF THE WALSH SYNDICATE VIA INSIDER ASSET PENETRATION.

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. The room spun.

She stared at the document, reading the operational summary line by line.

Subject Sophia Reed was never a random maid. Planted by federal intelligence as an undercover forensic accountant to infiltrate the Walsh inner circle. Her sister Hannah’s death was staged by federal operatives to force Sophia’s compliance...

Sophia slowly turned her head.

Declan was standing right behind her. He hadn't rushed to the screen. He hadn't looked surprised.

He was holding a glass of scotch, his pale blue eyes fixed on her face with a terrifying, absolute calm.

"You didn't think I checked your background for just the rent payments, did you, Sophia?" Declan asked, his voice dead, flat, and chillingly quiet.
