CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Hidden Behind Seven Words

Nobody understood what had just happened.

Not the judge.

Not the attorneys.

Not even Olivia.

Only Ethan looked as though someone had opened a grave beneath his feet.

He stared at the little girl.

His lips parted.

"You..."

His voice cracked.

"...what did you say?"

The little girl repeated herself.

This time louder.

"I know why Mommy cried every night."

The room became unnaturally quiet.

Even the court reporter stopped typing.

The elderly woman hurried forward.

"Lily!"

"I'm so sorry."

"Come here."

But Lily refused to move.

She kept staring directly at Ethan.

"You promised Mommy you would come back."

Every heartbeat inside Ethan's chest seemed to explode.

Vanessa frowned.

"What is this?"

"Ethan..."

"Who are these people?"

He couldn't answer.

Not because he didn't know.

Because he knew exactly who they were.

Eight years earlier...

Long before Carter Technologies became worth billions...

Before private jets.

Before magazine covers.

Before luxury penthouses.

There had been another woman.

Emily Brooks.

A graduate student.

Kind.

Brilliant.

Quiet.

She believed in Ethan before anyone else did.

She had invested every dollar from her scholarship to help him start his company.

Then...

One morning...

She disappeared.

At least...

That was the story Ethan had always told everyone.

But the truth...

Was something far uglier.

Emily hadn't disappeared.

Ethan had.

He left after learning she was pregnant.

Changed his number.

Moved across the country.

Built an empire.

And buried his past beneath billions of dollars.

Or so he believed.

Vanessa grabbed Ethan's arm.

"Tell me she's lying."

He remained silent.

His silence answered everything.

The courtroom gasped.

Judge Benson leaned forward.

"Mr. Carter..."

"Do you know this child?"

Ethan swallowed.

"I..."

He couldn't force the lie from his mouth.

Because Lily reached into her backpack.

Pulled out a tiny folded letter.

And handed it directly to the judge.

"My mommy said..."

"If I ever found him..."

"I should give him this."

Judge Benson unfolded the paper carefully.

The handwriting was faded.

Some words had been blurred by old tears.

He read silently.

Then stopped.

Read it again.

His expression completely changed.

He looked directly at Ethan.

His voice was colder than ice.

"Mr. Carter..."

"Did Emily Brooks die three months ago?"

Ethan's knees nearly buckled.

Nobody had told him.

Nobody.

He whispered...

"...yes."

Olivia slowly turned toward her husband.

Every lie.

Every business trip.

Every missing weekend.

Every secret phone call.

Suddenly...

Nothing made sense anymore.

Judge Benson placed the letter on the bench.

"There will be a short recess."

"No one leaves this courtroom."

May you like

Because something told him...

The divorce case had just become the smallest problem Ethan Carter would face today.
