CHAPTER 5 — The Lawyer Who Knew Too Much
The next morning, Olivia visited Margaret and Lily.
Margaret’s small house looked nothing like the world Ethan lived in.
No marble floors.
No security gates.
No private elevators.
Just family photos, old blankets, and the quiet sadness of a home that had lost too much.
Lily sat on the floor drawing a picture of her mother with angel wings.
Olivia’s heart broke.
Margaret noticed the folder in Olivia’s hand.
“What did you find?”
Olivia placed the anonymous photo on the table.
Margaret’s face changed immediately.
“I know that man.”
Olivia leaned forward.
“Richard Vale?”
Margaret nodded slowly.
“He came to Emily after Lily was born.”
“He told her Ethan wanted nothing to do with them.”
“He offered her money to disappear.”
Olivia’s stomach twisted.
“Did Emily take it?”
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
“She said Lily was not a mistake someone could pay to erase.”
Then Margaret went to a locked drawer and pulled out an old envelope.
“Emily told me to keep this hidden unless something happened to her.”
Inside were recordings.
Emails.
Bank transfers.
And one unsigned contract.
A contract offering Emily ten million dollars in exchange for surrendering all claim to Carter Technologies—and agreeing never to identify Ethan as Lily’s father.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
If I refuse, they will destroy me.
Olivia looked at Lily in the next room.
The little girl was humming softly, completely unaware that adults had been trying to erase her since before she could speak.
Olivia whispered,
“Then we don’t just have a divorce case anymore.”
