Chapter 3 - The Gilded Cage Reopened

Word Count: ~3,500 words
The ride back to New York was a nightmare wrapped in silence.
Isabella sat in the back of Dominic’s armored SUV, the heavy leather seats feeling more like an electric chair than luxury. Dominic sat right next to her, his massive body taking up most of the space, his presence an oppressive, suffocating force.
He hadn't touched her since they dragged her off the train. He hadn't yelled. He had simply ordered Marco to clear the car, took her by the elbow with a grip like iron, and guided her to the vehicle.
Now, he just stared at her. His eyes never left her face, tracking every twitch of her lips, every blink of her eyes, and most of all, the way both of her hands remained locked over her stomach like a shield.
"Why?" Dominic finally broke the silence, his voice dangerously quiet. "Two years, Isabella. Two years you’ve been under my roof. Eight months you’ve been in my bed. Have I ever starved you? Have I ever raised a hand to you?"
Isabella swallowed the lump of bile in her throat. She refused to look at him. She stared straight ahead at the back of Marco’s head in the driver's seat. "You know why."
"I don't," Dominic growled, leaning closer, his hand slamming against the leather seat behind her head, trapping her. "Tell me. Look at me and tell me why you fled my house like a thief in the night."
Isabella snapped. The fear that had kept her quiet for months mutated into a fierce, maternal rage. She turned her head, her brown eyes flashing with fire as she glared directly into his dark gaze.
"Because I heard you, Dominic!" she yelled, her voice cracking with raw emotion. "I stood outside your office three days ago. I heard what you said to Marco. 'A child is a liability I refuse to carry.' Those were your exact words!"
Dominic’s jaw tightened, a flash of surprise crossing his features before it was quickly replaced by a cold hardness. "You were eavesdropping."
"Thank God I was!" Isabella cried, tears of anger finally spilling over. "Because I am pregnant, Dominic. Your child. The child you called a liability. The child you think is a weakness. I know what men like you do to weaknesses. You eliminate them. You cut them out. I wasn't going to let you touch my baby!"
The silence that followed her confession was deafening. Even Marco seemed to hold his breath in the front seat, the car steering slightly before he corrected it.
Dominic didn't blink. He just stared at her, his eyes dropping to her hands, which were pressing hard against her belly. The anger in his face slowly morphed into something much more complex, something dark, obsessive, and dangerously possessive.
"You're three months along," he said, it wasn't a question. "The morning sickness. The fatigue. It all makes sense now."
"Are you going to kill it?" Isabella whispered, her voice suddenly dropping into a pathetic, terrified plea. "Please, Dominic. If you hate it, let me go. I’ll never ask you for a dime. I’ll change my name. I’ll disappear completely. Just... don't hurt my baby."
A dark, terrifying expression crossed Dominic’s face. He reached out, his large gloved hand cupping her chin, forcing her to look at him. His grip wasn't painful, but it was absolute.
"Hurt my own flesh and blood?" Dominic whispered, his eyes blazing with a frightening intensity. "You fool, Bella. You completely misunderstood me."
Isabella blinked, confused. "What?"
"A child is a liability in my life," Dominic explained, his voice dropping into a low, menacing register. "Because it is a vulnerability my enemies can use to destroy me. If the Lucchese or the Russian bratva knew I had a child, they would stop at nothing to tear it from my arms to break me. Because I would burn the world to ash to protect it."
He leaned in so close his lips brushed her ear. "You think I wanted to eliminate it? No, Bella. Now that I know you are carrying my child, you are never leaving my sight again. You are no longer my housekeeper. You are the mother of my heir. And I am going to lock you so deep inside my castle that not even the sun will be able to touch you without my permission."
Isabella’s breath hitched in horror. She hadn't escaped a monster; she had just triggered his ultimate evolution.
By midnight, they were back at the mansion. But they didn't go to her small staff room. Dominic personally carried her duffel bag up the grand staircase and threw open the doors to the master suite—his bedroom.
"This is your room now," Dominic said, stepping aside to let her enter the massive, opulent space filled with dark mahogany, silk sheets, and a roaring fireplace. "You will sleep here. With me. Every night."
"No," Isabella said, backing away toward the door. "I can't. Dominic, please—"
"You can, and you will," Dominic said, stepping into her path, his towering frame cutting off her escape. "There are four guards posted outside this door twenty-four hours a day. Two more beneath the balcony. Your old room is being cleared out. From this moment on, you don't pour coffee, you don't fold linen, and you don't leave this estate. You will rest, you will eat what my chefs prepare, and you will grow my child."
May you like
He stepped closer, his hand coming down gently, possessively, over her hands on her stomach. Isabella shivered at the warmth of his touch, hating herself for how safe it momentarily made her feel.
"You wanted to protect the baby, Bella?" Dominic whispered, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying promise. "So do I. From the rest of the world. And from your own foolish desire to run."
