Chapter 6 - The Plot Twist in the Ashes

Word Count: ~3,500 words

Four months later, the spring thaw had arrived, and Isabella was in her eighth month of pregnancy.

The Castelliano estate was quieter now, a fortress of peace built on the ashes of the Lucchese family. Dominic had changed. He still ran the empire with an iron fist, but he spent every available hour with Isabella. He walked with her through the gardens, helped her pick out colors for the nursery, and listened to the baby kick with a look of pure wonder on his face.

Isabella had accepted her life. She loved Dominic, despite the blood on his hands, and she knew their child would be showered with a fierce, protective devotion that few children ever knew.

But peace in the mafia is a ghost that disappears the moment you try to touch it.

It was a quiet Tuesday afternoon when Marco walked into the nursery, where Isabella was organizing tiny baby clothes. His face was entirely devoid of color, holding a yellowed, vintage envelope in his hand.

"Isabella," Marco said, his voice shaking in a way she had never heard before. "Where is Dominic?"

"He’s in a meeting with the tech security team downstairs," Isabella said, a sudden knot forming in her stomach. "What's wrong, Marco? You look like you've seen a ghost."

"I have," Marco whispered, stepping closer and handing her the envelope. "We were clearing out the safe-deposit boxes of the Lucchese family—the ones the feds didn't find. We found this. It belonged to Don Lucchese’s personal archives. It’s an old adoption record and a DNA profile from twenty-three years ago."

Isabella frowned, taking the heavy paper out of the envelope. She scanned the medical jargon, the legal stamps, and the names.

Her breath completely caught in her throat. The world around her seemed to tilt on its axis.

The adoption record was for a baby girl born in a charity hospital in Brooklyn twenty-three years ago. The biological mother had died during childbirth. The child had been placed into the foster care system under a generic state name.

Isabella Romano.

But it was the biological father's name that made the paper slip from her numb fingers, fluttering to the floor like a dying leaf.

Biological Father: Vittorio Lucchese.

Isabella stumbled backward, hitting the edge of the crib. "No... no, this is a mistake. This can't be real."

"It is real, Bella," Marco said, his eyes filled with absolute horror and pity. "Don Lucchese didn't know. He never knew his estranged, runaway brother had a child before he died. He didn't order that poison to kill Dominic’s heir because he hated Dominic. He ordered it because he thought you were just a random servant girl."

Isabella’s mind raced in a frantic, terrifying loop.

She wasn't a nobody. She was a Lucchese. The last remaining bloodline of the very family Dominic had brutally slaughtered four months ago. The family he had vowed to completely erase from the face of the earth.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the nursery swung open.

Dominic stood in the doorway, his eyes scanning the tense room, instantly locking onto the fallen paper at Isabella’s feet. His dark eyes narrowed as he walked inside, picking up the document.

Isabella watched his face as he read it. She watched the realization hit him like a physical blow. The man who had conquered New York, the man who feared nothing, suddenly looked completely paralyzed with terror.

He dropped the paper. He looked at Isabella’s pregnant stomach, then into her wide, terrified eyes.

"Bella..." Dominic whispered, stepping toward her, his hands trembling.

"You killed them all," Isabella whispered, backing away from him until her spine hit the wall, tears streaming down her face as the ultimate, tragic irony of their lives crashed over them. "My uncles... my cousins... my entire biological family. You slaughtered them to save me... from them."

Dominic stood in the center of the beautiful nursery, surrounded by pastel colors and baby toys, completely trapped by the ghosts of his own violence. He had eliminated his liabilities, only to find out that the greatest vulnerability he ever possessed was the blood of his enemy running through the veins of the woman he loved—and the child she was about to bring into the world.

"I don't care about their name," Dominic said, his voice cracking with a fierce, desperate passion as he fell to his knees before her, wrapping his arms around her waist, burying his face against her pregnant belly. "I don't care whose blood you have, Bella. You are mine. This child is mine. We will build a new family from the ashes. I will never let them take you from me."

Isabella looked down at the top of his dark head, her hands slowly rising to rest on his hair. She was a prisoner of love, a princess born from a slaughtered dynasty, bound forever to the monster who had destroyed her past to secure her future.

The ultimate drama had just begun, and there was no turning back.
