Chapter 16 - Empire of the Sun

Six months later, the crisp autumn wind swept off Lake Michigan, rustling the golden leaves of the trees surrounding the Crawford estate.

I stood on the expansive stone balcony of the master penthouse, cradling my son—now six months old, laughing and reaching out to grab a stray lock of my hair with tiny, strong fingers.

"He has your eyes, you know," Eleanor said softly, stepping out onto the balcony with two cups of steaming coffee and handing one to me.

"He has your stubbornness," I laughed, kissing the top of my son's head as he gurgled happily.

The transformation of my life over the past half-year had been nothing short of miraculous. Crawford Holdings was now operating under my direct leadership as co-CEO alongside my mother, focusing on philanthropic housing initiatives for mothers and children fleeing abusive environments—a cause that had become my life’s mission.

The Grand Belmont lobby, where my life had shattered into a million pieces under a crystal chandelier, now featured a permanent charitable foundation plaque bearing my name, reminding every visitor that true strength cannot be bought, sold, or thrown away.

Richard Sterling was currently residing in a maximum-security cell in Marion, forgotten by society, his name stricken from corporate registries and legal records alike. He was a cautionary tale whispered in boardrooms across Chicago—the man who held all the cards and lost everything because he underestimated an abandoned orphan.

"Are you ready for the board meeting this afternoon?" Eleanor asked, smiling warmly as she adjusted the collar of my blazer. "The expansion into the European markets is officially on the table."

I looked down at my wrist. The silver bracelet caught the afternoon sun, glowing with a warm, enduring light. I touched it gently, feeling the connection to the past, the present, and an unstoppable future.

"Let's go," I said, a confident smile spreading across my face. "We have an empire to run."
