Chapter 5 - The Lobby Showdown, Round Two

The news vans were already parked outside the Grand Belmont by the time the private elevator descended back to the main lobby. Flashing red and blue lights from police cruisers reflected off the marble floors, mixing with the blinding white camera flashes of dozens of reporters who had somehow been tipped off about the corporate scandal unfolding inside.
Richard Sterling stood at the center of the lobby, disheveled, his expensive tie loosened, shouting into the microphone of a local news reporter while Victoria Vance clung dramatically to his arm.
"It’s a hostile takeover!" Richard shouted, playing the victim with theatrical perfection. "My estranged wife, Claire Sterling, a mentally unstable woman with a history of delusions, conspired with corrupt corporate executives to usurp my life’s work! She abandoned our home, stole company documents, and—"
"Mr. Sterling," a crisp, amplified voice cut through the chaos.
The entire lobby froze.
Cameras swung around as Eleanor Crawford walked out of the private elevator, her posture rigid, her expression carved from absolute ice. Behind her walked Arthur Vance, holding the manila folder, and right beside them, standing tall with my head held high and my hands resting gently on my eight-month belly, walked me.
Richard’s jaw dropped. The color drained entirely from his face.
"Claire..." he stammered, pointing a shaking finger at me. "Get away from her! She’s unstable! She’s trespassing!"
"Mr. Sterling," Eleanor said, stepping up to the microphone stand that the reporters had set up. "You are currently standing on property owned exclusively by Crawford Holdings. Furthermore, you are addressing the sole legal heir to this entire empire—and my daughter."
A collective gasp swept through the pack of journalists. Microphones thrust forward like hungry wolves.
"Mrs. Crawford! Is this true? Is Claire Sterling the missing heir?" shouted a reporter from the Chicago Tribune.
"It is entirely true," Eleanor declared loudly. "And furthermore, we have conclusive forensic proof—provided by Vance & Sterling Law—that Richard Sterling has spent the last three years systematically embezzling millions from the Crawford Trust, while simultaneously subjecting my daughter to severe psychological abuse and financial entrapment."
Victoria Vance shrieked, letting go of Richard’s arm as if he had caught fire. "Richard! You told me her family was dead! You told me she was a penniless nobody!"
Richard turned on Victoria, panic-stricken. "Victoria, shut up, don't listen to them—"
"Too late, Richard," Arthur Vance said coldly, stepping forward to look his former business partner—and prospective son-in-law—straight in the eye. "My firm’s forensic audit just cleared every server in your office. The police are already walking up to your penthouse to execute an arrest warrant for grand larceny, identity fraud, and extortion."
As if on cue, two Chicago police officers pushed through the crowd of reporters, stepping directly up to Richard and placing heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Richard thrashed wildly, his face contorted in an ugly, desperate snarl. He lunged toward me, his eyes wide with venom.
"You think you’ve won?" he screamed over the flashbulbs, spitting as he was dragged backward toward the exit. "You’re nothing without me, Claire! You’re a broken, abandoned orphan, and you’ll always be a victim!"
May you like
I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I placed one hand on my belly, feeling my child kick with strong, vibrant life, and looked Richard straight in the eye.
"No, Richard," I said clearly into the nearest microphone. "I was an orphan. Now, I'm a Crawford."
