Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Waverly

"Come with me, sweetheart," Eleanor murmured, her hand warm and steady as she took my arm, completely ignoring Richard who was now clawing desperately at the hotel manager's sleeve.

Eleanor led me past the security guards, past the gaping crowd, and straight into the private elevator. The heavy brass doors slid shut, sealing out Richard’s desperate, frantic screaming.

As the elevator ascended smoothly toward the penthouse, the weight of the past twenty-four hours finally crashed down on me. My legs buckled slightly, but Eleanor caught me with surprising strength, guiding me onto a plush velvet sofa inside the private antechamber of her personal suite.

"Get the house physician up here immediately," Eleanor instructed Marcus over the intercom, her tone commanding zero argument. "And bring warm tea and fruit."

She knelt beside the sofa, looking at me with a tenderness that completely broke down the emotional walls I had built over a lifetime of foster homes, rejection, and loneliness.

"You survived," Eleanor whispered, brushing a stray lock of hair from my forehead. "All these years... I searched for you, Claire. After the night of the fire at the Waverly mission, the authorities told me you didn't survive. They found a blanket, but... I never stopped looking. I built Crawford Holdings, I bought half of this city, just so my name would be everywhere—hoping that one day, if you were out there, you would see it and know your mother was looking for you."

"A fire?" I asked, my voice shaking. "I was told I was abandoned in a basket on the steps. No notes. No history."

Eleanor’s expression darkened, a shadow of deep-seated grief and fury crossing her features. "Lies. Fabricated by the man who stole you from me."

"Who?"

Before Eleanor could answer, the double doors of the penthouse suite swung open. A tall man in his late forties stepped inside, breathless, holding an old leather-bound journal. When his eyes landed on me, he stopped dead in his tracks.

The resemblance was undeniable. He had my eyes, the same sharp jawline, and the exact same nervous tic in his left hand.

"Eleanor," the man breathed, his voice cracking. "Is it... is it really her?"

"Look at her wrist, David," Eleanor said softly.

David stepped forward, saw the silver bracelet, and fell to his knees beside the sofa, burying his face in his hands as he wept.

"My niece," he choked out. "After all this time... David Sterling is going to pay for what he did."

My heart stopped.

May you like

"Sterling?" I whispered, staring between my mother and my uncle. "Did you say... David Sterling?"

"Yes, my sweet girl," David said, looking up with tears streaming down his cheeks. "Richard Sterling isn't just your abusive husband. He is your own flesh and blood—our cousin's son, raised on stolen money and stolen legacy."
