Chapter 8 - The Final Threat

I stared at my mother, the warmth of the room suddenly turning to ice. "From prison?"
"No," Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The marshal service just notified us. Richard didn't make it to his holding cell last night. During the transfer transport between the county jail and the federal penitentiary... his vehicle was intercepted."
My blood ran cold. "Intercepted? What does that mean? Did he escape?"
"Not alone," David said grimly, walking over to read the letter over Eleanor's shoulder. "According to this, an armed commando unit ambushed the transport van on the interstate. They neutralized the guards—nobody was killed, thankfully—and took Richard. But that's not the worst part."
"What is?" I demanded, clutching the edge of the blanket.
Eleanor looked up, her eyes locked onto mine with terrifying intensity. "He left a message carved into the dashboard of the abandoned van. It was addressed specifically to you, Claire."
She handed me the note. My fingers trembled as I read the block letters scrawled in black marker:
YOU THINK YOU WON BECAUSE OF A SILVER BRACELET AND A BILLIONAIRE MOTHER. BUT A CRAWFORD ALWAYS LEAVES A BACK DOOR OPEN. I'M COMING FOR MY SON, CLAIRE. AND THEN I'M COMING FOR EVERYTHING ELSE.
A wave of absolute terror paralyzed my lungs. My newborn son was sleeping peacefully in the bassinet just three feet away.
"He's out there," I whispered, panic rising in my throat. "He knows where we are."
"He thinks he can terrorize us," Eleanor said, her voice instantly hardening into cold, calculating steel. She stood up, walked to the intercom on the wall, and pressed the direct line to the estate’s security command center. "General Vance, this is Eleanor Crawford. Code Black across all properties. Lock down the estate, activate the perimeter lasers, and scramble our private tactical unit. Nobody enters or leaves without my explicit authorization."
"Understood, Mrs. Crawford," a crisp voice replied over the speaker.
David walked over to my bedside, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Listen to me, Claire. Richard is desperate, unhinged, and operating on pure delusion. He has no money left, no legitimate allies, and no legal standing. He is a cornered animal lashing out in the dark."

"An animal that knows every weakness I ever confessed to him," I replied, my voice shaking as I looked over at my baby. "He knows I’ve spent my whole life feeling unlovable, terrified of being left behind. He’s going to try to use my son to break me."
"He can try," Eleanor said, walking over to the bassinet and gently stroking my son’s cheek with a look of absolute, unyielding protection. "Because this time, he’s not fighting a helpless girl in a hotel lobby. He’s fighting the entire Crawford dynasty. And we are going to finish this once and for all."
