Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Ethan Cole’s office didn’t just command the top floor of the Seattle obsidian tower; it overlooked a city that trembled at his shadow. But tonight, the city outside was drowned out by the absolute stillness inside the room.

On the polished mahogany table, a single white napkin cradled a cold, half-eaten piece of toast.

"Sir," Mark, his head of security, spoke in a low, gravelly voice, breaking the oppressive silence. "The personnel registry for the custodial contractor lists a Sophie Miller. Her address is a tenement apartment on 4th and Jackson. But there’s a complication."

Ethan didn’t turn around. He stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass, watching the neon lights bleed through the rain. "What kind of complication?"

"The security feeds from the building's loading dock show Amy didn’t take the public bus. She was dropped off by a black van belonging to the Moretti syndicate. One of their low-level enforcers dumped her two blocks away."

Ethan’s jaw tightened. The Morettis—his chief rivals in the West Coast underworld—were probing his perimeter. They hadn’t sent an assassin; they had sent a six-year-old child as a walking Trojan horse, testing whether his security was slipping, or worse, hoping to use the mother's contract as leverage.

"They knew she was coming," Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the lethal weight of an approaching avalanche.

"They watched her walk through the front doors, Boss," Mark confirmed, his hand instinctively dropping to his holster. "And right now, Vincenzo Moretti’s men are staking out Seattle General Hospital, where Sophie Miller is currently admitted."

Ethan turned sharply. His eyes were cold, dark, and utterly devoid of mercy. The boy he used to be—the starving child in the alleyways who had to fight for scraps—was completely gone. In his place stood the apex predator of the Pacific Northwest.

"Mark," Ethan said smoothly, pulling a sleek, encrypted burner phone from his pocket. "Mobilize the Vanguard units. Secure the hospital before Moretti’s men even realize the chessboard has shifted. And bring me the mother."

"And the girl, sir?"

Ethan looked back at the small gray custodial uniform draped over his leather chair, the oversized sleeves rolled up, the pink sneakers resting neatly on the edge of the rug where Amy had carefully placed them before falling asleep on his sofa.

"She stays with me," Ethan commanded. "Nobody touches what belongs to the Cole family. Let's see how Vincenzo likes playing with fire."
