Chapter 2 - Blood in the Sterile Halls

The corridors of Seattle General Hospital smelled of bleach, antiseptic, and quiet desperation. Room 412 was tucked away in the older wing, far from the polished suites of the wealthy, reserved for those whose insurance was paid in sweat and deferred dreams.
Sophie Miller woke up to the sound of heavy, disciplined boots clicking against the linoleum.
She was pale, her fingers clutching the thin cotton blanket as a relentless, hacking cough tore through her chest. The television was playing low in the background, but her mind was fixed on one agonizing thought: Where is Amy? She had sent her little girl to the neighbor, Mrs. Gable, but when she woke up delirious from a spiking fever, she knew the apartment had been empty. Amy had gone to work. Amy had tried to save them.
The door clicked open.
Sophie flinched, expecting a nurse with bad news about her mounting medical debt. Instead, three towering men in tailored charcoal suits stepped inside, scanning every corner of the room with military precision. They didn’t draw weapons, but their presence sucked the oxygen right out of the room.
Stepping past them was a man who didn't belong in a hospital.
Ethan Cole walked in with an air of absolute authority. His expression was a mask of cold granite, yet his eyes swept over Sophie—the thin frame, the IV bruised arms, the raw panic in her eyes—and registered every single detail of her quiet suffering.
"You're... you're Ethan Cole," Sophie whispered, her voice cracking like dry wood. She tried to sit up, her heart pounding against her ribs. "Did... did Amy break something? Is she in trouble? Please, sir, take me instead. She's only six—she didn't mean to—"
"Quiet, Miss Miller," Ethan interrupted, his voice surprisingly steady, lacking the cruelty the tabloids always attributed to him. He stepped to the side of the bed and pressed a hand against the control panel to lower her mattress slightly, forcing her to rest. "Your daughter is safe. She’s currently sleeping on a very expensive leather sofa in my office, dreaming about pancakes."
Sophie froze. Tears spilled over her eyelashes, hot and fast. "My baby... you have my baby..."
"She walked into a war zone with a cleaning rag and half a piece of toast," Ethan said, a flicker of something ancient and bitter crossing his face. "She has more courage than half my board of directors. But she also walked right into a trap."
Before Sophie could ask what he meant, the muffled sound of shouting echoed from down the hallway.
Clack. Clack. Clack.
Boots running. Heavy, uncoordinated, aggressive.
Mark stepped back into the doorway, his weapon drawn, his face grim. "Boss. Moretti’s cleanup crew just breached the south stairwell. Four men, heavily armed. They aren't here to negotiate; they’re here to tie up loose ends. They know Amy was in your office, and they want to eliminate any links to the contract."
Sophie gasped, clutching her chest. "They're coming for us?"

Ethan didn’t flinch. He didn’t panic. He simply buttoned his suit jacket, his eyes locking onto the door.
"They wanted to play a game with my territory," Ethan whispered, pulling a heavy, suppressed automatic pistol from his shoulder holster with fluid, lethal grace. He turned to Mark. "Secure the perimeter. Leave the lead enforcer for me. I want to teach Vincenzo a lesson in real estate."
