Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The silence that followed Madison’s voice wasn’t just quiet; it was suffocating.
Ethan stood frozen in the kitchen doorway, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped animal. He looked at Emily. A single tear tracks through the soap suds on her pale cheek. She didn’t look up at him. She couldn’t. Her head hung low, her shoulders shaking under the weight of her eight-month pregnancy, her swollen ankles visibly trembling.
"Emily," Ethan whispered again, his voice cracking. "How long?"
She didn't answer. She just gripped the edge of the marble sink, her knuckles turning white. "Ethan, please," she murmured, her voice a fragile thread. "Just let me finish. I don't want to make a scene. It's fine."
"It is not fine," he roared.
The sheer volume of his voice shattered the pristine ambiance of the house. From the living room, the easy laughter instantly died.
Ethan turned around, his vision blurring with a dangerous mix of exhaustion and pure, unadulterated rage. He walked back down the hallway, every footstep echoing like a gavel in a courtroom. When he entered the living room, his mother, Linda, and his three sisters—Chloe, Madison, and Olivia—were frozen in their spots.
Olivia still held her phone. Madison had a fork halfway to her mouth, loaded with expensive truffled pasta that Ethan had paid for.
"What is the meaning of this?" Ethan demanded, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with a wrath none of them had ever seen before.
Linda was the first to recover. She smoothed down her designer silk blouse, putting on her trademark soothing smile—the one she always used when she wanted to manipulate him. "Ethan, darling, you're stressed. You’ve been working such long hours. Sit down, let Madison get you a glass of wine—"
"I asked you a question!" Ethan slammed his hand against the glass coffee table. The impact rattled the expensive crystal vases. "Why is my heavily pregnant fiancé standing over a mountain of filth in the kitchen while the four of you sit here like royalty?"
Madison rolled her eyes, tossing her fork onto the plate. "Oh, please, Ethan. Don't be so dramatic. She volunteered. We asked her nicely if she could clean up after dinner. It's the least she can do, considering she lives here rent-free."
Ethan felt a physical sickness rise in his throat. Rent-free.
"She lives here with me," Ethan spat, stepping closer to Madison. "In the house I bought. Eating food I paid for. Wearing clothes I sweat for. You four haven't paid a single bill in five years!"
Chloe, the youngest, puffed out her chest. "We are your family, Ethan! Dad told you to take care of us!"
"Dad didn't tell me to raise four parasites!" Ethan shouted.
Linda gasped, clutching her chest, playing the victim instantly. "Ethan! How dare you speak to your sisters that way? We have been nothing but welcoming to that... that girl. But she has to earn her keep. She’s bringing a child into this family, and she needs to learn how to manage a household. We were just helping her."
"Helping her?" Ethan let out a dark, breathless laugh. "By making her wash your dishes until her feet bleed? By treating her like a maid while you lounge on a ten-thousand-dollar sofa that I paid for?"
Just then, a soft gasp came from behind him.
Ethan turned around. Emily was standing at the entrance of the living room, holding a plastic bucket of ice. She had tried to fulfill Madison’s request anyway, desperate to keep the peace. But as she stepped forward, her foot slipped on a wet patch of floor she had trailed in from the kitchen.
"Ethan!" she screamed.
Time slowed down. Emily lost her balance, her body twisting as she tried to protect her swollen belly. She crashed heavily onto the hardwood floor, the bucket of ice scattering across the room like shattered glass.
A sharp, agonizing shriek tore from Emily’s throat. She clutched her stomach, her face contorting in pure agony.
"Emily!" Ethan lunged forward, dropping to his knees beside her.
Linda and his sisters watched in frozen horror, but not out of sympathy—out of fear of the consequences.
Ethan reached for Emily, but as he pulled his hand away from her dress, his heart stopped. His palm was covered in bright, crimson blood.
"No, no, no," Ethan panicked, his voice rising to a frantic scream. "Call 911! Madison, Olivia, call an ambulance right now!"
The sisters scrambled, suddenly realizing the gravity of what their cruelty had caused. Emily gripped Ethan’s shirt, her eyes wide with terror. "The baby... Ethan, the baby..." she whispered, before her eyes rolled back into her head, and she went completely limp in his arms.

Ethan looked up at his mother, his eyes burning with a hatred so deep it shook Linda to her very core.
"If she loses this baby," Ethan whispered, his voice deadly quiet, "I will destroy every single one of you."
