Chapter 2 - The Hospital Vigil

The glaring fluorescent lights of the San Diego Memorial Hospital cast a sickly pale hue over Ethan’s face. He sat in the waiting room, his head buried in his blood-stained hands. The smell of copper and hospital antiseptic clung to him, a brutal reminder of the nightmare that was unfolding behind the double doors of the Emergency Room.

It had been four hours. Four agonizing hours of silence from the medical staff.

The door to the waiting area swung open. Linda, Chloe, Madison, and Olivia walked in. They had changed out of their designer lounge gear into casual clothes, trying to look like a worried, supportive family. But Ethan could see right through it. They weren't worried about Emily. They were worried about their bank accounts.

Linda walked over, reaching out a manicured hand to touch Ethan’s shoulder. "Ethan, sweetheart... the doctors will save her. You need to stay strong for us."

Ethan didn't flinch. He didn't move. He simply stood up, stepping out of her reach. His movement was so cold, so clinical, that Linda’s hand froze mid-air.

"Get out," Ethan said, his voice flat.

"Ethan, please, we are your family—" Madison started.

"I said, get out," Ethan turned on them, his eyes bloodshot, his face a mask of stone. "You are not here for Emily. You are here because you're terrified that your golden goose is finally going to cut you off. Don't look at me with those fake tears, Chloe. I saw how you looked when she fell. You weren't worried about her; you were worried about the mess on the floor."

"That's uncalled for!" Linda hissed, her matriarchal authority slipping. "We did nothing wrong! It was an accident! Women slip all the time. She’s clumsy, Ethan! You can't blame us for her lack of coordination!"

Ethan stared at his mother. This was the woman he had idolized. The woman he had worked eighty-hour weeks for, sacrificing his twenties so she could live in luxury. Now, she looked like a monster.

"She was exhausted because you treated her like an indentured servant," Ethan said, each word dripping with venom. "I checked the security cameras on my phone while waiting here, mother."

The four women stiffened.

"Oh, yes," Ethan smiled, a terrifying, humorless expression. "I forgot I installed those discreet cameras in the kitchen and hallway last month after the neighborhood break-ins. I saw everything. I saw you, Madison, deliberately spilling juice on the floor and making Emily clean it. I saw you, Chloe, laughing while she begged you to help her carry the heavy grocery bags. And I heard you, Mother. I heard you tell her that if she complained to me, you would make sure I threw her out."

Linda’s face drained of color. Madison looked away, unable to hold Ethan’s gaze.

"You abused her," Ethan whispered, the realization crushing his soul. "The woman I love. The mother of my child. Under my roof. With the money I earned."

Before Linda could speak, the heavy doors of the intensive care unit swung open. A doctor in surgical scrubs walked out, looking tired and grave.

"Are you the family of Emily Vance?" the doctor asked.

Ethan bypassed his family entirely, rushing to the doctor. "I'm her fiancé. Is she okay? The baby?"

The doctor sighed, rubbing his temples. "Mr. Vance, your fiancé suffered a placental abruption due to severe physical stress and the trauma of the fall. We had to perform an emergency C-section to save the child."

Ethan’s breath hitched. "And Emily? Is she..."

"She lost a critical amount of blood. She is currently in a medically induced coma. We are monitoring her hour by hour," the doctor said grimly. "As for the baby boy... he was born premature. He is in the NICU on life support. The next forty-eight hours will determine if he survives."

Ethan felt the world tilt on its axis. His son was fighting for his life. His fiancé was in a coma.

Behind him, Chloe whispered loud enough for him to hear, "Oh thank god, at least it's a boy to carry the Vance name."

Ethan didn't yell. He didn't scream. The anger inside him died, replaced by a cold, calculating resolve. He turned back to his family.

"Tomorrow morning, the locks on the house will be changed," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Your credit cards, which are under my primary account, have already been frozen. The leases on your luxury cars will be terminated by noon."

Linda gasped, her eyes wide with panic. "Ethan! You can't do this! Where will we go? How will we live?"

"I don't care," Ethan said, turning his back on them permanently. "Find a job. Or starve. You are dead to me."
