Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Twist

The fallout was catastrophic for the Vance women.

The Facebook Live recording became the most shared video of the year. The public’s hatred instantly flipped from Ethan to his mother and sisters. The internet, furious at being manipulated by Linda’s fake victim video, tore them apart. Madison and Linda were denied bail due to the severity of the flight risk and the nature of the assault charges. Chloe and Olivia were left penniless, evicted from the house, their names so toxic that no employer would hire them. They were forced to move into a dingy, run-down motel on the outskirts of the city, surviving on government assistance.

Two months later, life had completely transformed for Ethan.

Emily had made a full recovery. Their son, Leo, had beaten all the odds. He was released from the NICU, a healthy, chubby, beautiful baby boy who brought nothing but pure joy into their lives.

Ethan had sold the flawless San Diego house. It held too many dark memories. Instead, he bought a beautiful, cozy cottage overlooking the ocean in Del Mar. It wasn't as grand or expensive as the old place, but it was filled with something the old house never had: real, genuine love.

It was a peaceful Sunday afternoon. Emily was sitting on the porch, rocking Leo to sleep, while Ethan stood kitchen, making coffee. The sun was setting over the Pacific, painting the sky in brilliant hues of gold and pink.

The doorbell rang.

Ethan walked over and opened it. Standing on the porch was Arthur Pendelton, holding a briefcase. He looked incredibly uneasy.

"Arthur?" Ethan said, surprised. "What are you doing here on a Sunday? The criminal trial for my mother is locked in. There shouldn't be any issues."

"Ethan... can we step inside? Private?" Arthur whispered, looking over his shoulder.

Ethan’s smile faded. He led Arthur into his private study, closing the door behind them. "What's going on? Did my mother find a legal loophole? Is she getting out?"

"No," Arthur said, setting his briefcase on the desk. "Linda is going to prison for at least fifteen years. The evidence of her forging your signature to steal the four point five million dollars is absolute."

"Then what is it?" Ethan asked, getting impatient.

Arthur opened the briefcase and pulled out a dusty, yellowed document, completely separate from the trust fund files they had seen before.

"When we seized your mother’s offshore bank accounts and audited your late father’s personal safe deposit boxes to recover your stolen millions... we found a secret compartment," Arthur said, his voice trembling slightly. "Inside it was your father’s original medical record from thirty-three years ago. Before you were born."

Ethan frowned. "My father’s medical records? Why would my mother hide that?"

Arthur took a deep breath, looking at Ethan with a mixture of profound pity and shock. "Ethan... the records prove that your father underwent a successful, permanent vasectomy in his twenties, following a severe medical complication. He was completely, medically sterile."

The room went dead silent. The sound of the ocean waves outside faded into nothingness.

Ethan stared at the lawyer, his brain refusing to process the words. "What... what are you saying?"

"I ran a discreet, expedited DNA profile using the biological samples your mother submitted for her bail application against your own DNA profile from the hospital records," Arthur whispered, placing a DNA report on top of the medical file.

"Ethan... Linda is your biological mother. But the man you spent your entire life sacrificing for... the man whose memory you worked yourself to the bone to honor... he wasn't your biological father. And your sisters? Chloe, Madison, and Olivia? They are your half-sisters. They were fathered by your dad. But you..."

Arthur paused, swallowing hard.

"Your biological father is a man named Charles Montgomery. The multi-billionaire real estate mogul who owns Montgomery International—the exact corporate conglomerate that just bought out your architectural firm last month."

Ethan’s world didn't just tilt; it completely shattered.

His father wasn't his father. His entire life of guilt, of fulfilling a "son’s duty" to a dead man, was built on a lie his mother had crafted to cover up an affair. And the billionaire who now owned his company, the man who had suddenly promoted Ethan to Senior Vice President out of nowhere last week... was his real father.

Suddenly, Ethan’s phone buzzed in his pocket.

He pulled it out with a numb, trembling hand. It was an email notification from the CEO’s office of Montgomery International.

The subject line read: A Private Dinner Invitation from Charles Montgomery.

The text inside was short: "Ethan, it's time we talk about your future. And your true inheritance."

Ethan looked out the window at Emily and his son, then down at the DNA report. The battle with his mother was over, but a far bigger, more dangerous game for a multi-billion dollar empire had just begun.
