Chapter 3 - The Price of Possession

The digital dashboard of Evan’s BMW read 1:15 AM as he pulled into the driveway of his suburban residence. The house stood dark and silent, save for the amber glow of the porch light casting long, distorted shadows across the manicured lawn.
He didn't use his key. He walked straight to the front door and pushed down on the handle. It swung open smoothly—Sabrina had never bothered to lock it, operating under the arrogant assumption that she was the absolute sovereign of this domain.
Stepping inside, the air felt thick, charged with an eerie stillness.
"Sabrina," Evan called out, his voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings of the foyer.
There was no immediate answer. Then, a soft click came from the top of the grand staircase. Sabrina appeared at the landing, wearing a silk robe, her blonde hair falling in loose waves over her shoulders. She looked remarkably composed for a woman who, hours earlier, had committed felony assault in front of police officers.
"You're back early," Sabrina said, leaning against the wrought-iron banister. Her tone carried a sickeningly sweet cadence, dripping with practiced condescension. "How is the local charity case? Did the doctors patch up her bruised ego?"
Evan didn't flinch. He walked slowly toward the stairs, each step deliberate, heavy, and measured.
"The police are running your prints and cross-referencing the domestic disturbance call," Evan said, his voice chillingly level. "By morning, there will be a felony warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon sitting on the desk of the district attorney. You're going to jail, Sabrina."
Sabrina scoffed, a sharp, dismissive sound that bounced off the walls. She walked down the first few steps, descending into his line of sight with an infuriating smirk playing on her lips.
"Jail? Please, Evan," she laughed softly, shaking her head. "You honestly think you can do that to me? Think about the headlines, darling. Prominent Real Estate Mogul’s Fiancée Arrested in Brutal Turf War Over Neighbor’s Illegitimate Child. How do you think your investors are going to react to that kind of tabloid circus? Your stock options will plummet before the opening bell rings on Wall Street."
"You think this is about money?" Evan asked, stopping at the foot of the stairs, looking up at her with a gaze so intensely cold it finally made her hesitation stutter.
"Everything is about money and image with you, Evan," Sabrina snapped, her mask of cool superiority finally slipping just a fraction. Her eyes flashed with sudden, bitter resentment. "I’ve spent the last three years building your brand. I host your galas, I manage your social calendar, I curated your entire public persona! And you’re going to throw all of that away for a washed-up freelance artist and a bastard child who doesn't even share your last name?"
"She is my daughter," Evan said, each word dropping like a lead weight.
"She is a mistake!" Sabrina screamed, losing her temper completely. She stomped down another step, pointing a manicured finger directly at his face. "A parasite that woman dropped on your doorstep to trap you! And you’re falling right into her trap! But you want to know the best part, Evan?"
A cruel, twisted smile spread across Sabrina’s face, one that made Evan’s stomach churn.
"What part is that, Sabrina?" he asked softly, baiting her trap.
"You can call the police. You can get your little warrant. It won't change the fact that while you were sitting in that sterile hospital room playing knight in shining armor, I took the liberty of clearing out our joint corporate investment account," Sabrina laughed, a shrill, triumphant sound. "Two million, four hundred thousand dollars. Transferred out of your primary holding LLC and into an offshore Swiss account in my mother's maiden name at 11:00 PM tonight. By the time the sun comes up, that money will be completely untraceable."
Evan stared at her. The silence stretched between them for a long, agonizing beat.
Sabrina misread his silence for defeat. She tossed her hair back, her chest heaving with adrenaline-fueled triumph.
"So go ahead, Evan. Call your lawyers. File your charges. But remember—without liquid capital, your upcoming commercial acquisition on the waterfront defaults in forty-eight hours. You’ll lose the entire development deal, your investors will crucify you, and you’ll be bankrupt by the end of the month. You want to ruin my life? Go right ahead. But you’ll be burning your own empire to the ground to do it."
She turned on her heel, fully expecting him to crumble, to beg, to negotiate for the survival of his life's work.
"Are you finished?" Evan’s voice cut through the quiet hallway like a razor blade.
Sabrina froze, slowly turning her head back over her shoulder. "What?"
"Are you completely finished with your little performance?" Evan repeated, taking two slow steps up the stairs toward her.
He reached into the pocket of his tailored slacks, pulled out his smartphone, unlocked the screen with a single tap, and held it out toward her. The screen was illuminated, displaying an active audio-recording interface with a running timer reading 014:22—capturing every single word of her brazen confession regarding the wire fraud and asset embezzlement.
Sabrina’s face drained of every drop of color. Her eyes widened in stark, unadulterated horror as she stared at the glowing screen.
"You... you recorded that," she whispered, her voice trembling violently.
"Every single syllable," Evan said, stepping up to eye level with her on the landing. His face was inches from hers, burning with an incandescent rage that made her shrink back against the banister. "You think I built a multi-million-dollar empire by being careless, Sabrina? You think a woman who couldn't even keep her temper under control while holding a hockey stick was smart enough to outmaneuver me?"
"Evan, wait—let's talk about this," Sabrina stammered, her hands flying up to grab his lapels, her voice cracking with sudden, desperate panic. "I was just angry! I didn't mean it, I—"

"Pack your bags," Evan interrupted, his voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. "You have thirty minutes to clear your things out of this house. If you are still here when the clock strikes two, I won't just hand this recording to the district attorney for felony assault. I will personally ensure you spend the next twenty years of your life sleeping on a steel cot in a maximum-security penitentiary for corporate wire fraud and grand larceny."
He yanked his jacket free from her trembling grip, turned around, and walked back down the stairs, leaving her paralyzed and weeping on the landing.
