Chapter 7 - The Final Verdict

Three months later, the federal district courtroom downtown was quiet, save for the rhythmic clicking of the court stenographer’s machine and the heavy rustle of legal briefs.
Evan Mercer sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sharp navy suit, his posture completely relaxed. Seated to his right was Leah, looking healthy, vibrant, and entirely restored, her shoulder fully healed from the physical trauma of that fateful night. And nestled right between them in the wooden bench was Ellie, swinging her legs back and forth, entirely bored by the formal legal proceedings unfolding around her.
At the defense table sat Sabrina Vance.
Gone were the designer silk robes, the haughty sneers, and the untouchable air of arrogant superiority. She wore a standard orange jumpsuit, her blonde hair pulled back into a simple, unstyled ponytail, her face devoid of makeup. Her eyes were cast downward, fixed on the polished mahogany of the table as the federal judge read aloud the final sentencing terms.
"In the matter of United States versus Sabrina Vance," Judge Harrison announced, his deep voice echoing off the oak-paneled walls, "the defendant having pled guilty to charges of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement, alongside state-level felony assault charges, this court hereby sentences the defendant to a term of eight years in a federal correctional facility, with no possibility of parole for the first five years, followed by three years of supervised probation and full financial restitution."
The gavel came down with a sharp, definitive crack. Thunk.
Sabrina didn't look up. Two federal marshals stepped forward, gently placing their hands on her shoulders and lifting her from her chair, escorting her through the side exit and out of Evan’s life forever.
The nightmare was officially over.
As the gallery began to empty, Evan stood up, straightening his tie, and offered his hand to Leah. She took it gladly, standing up and sliding her fingers securely into his.

"It's over," Leah breathed, looking up at him with a soft, genuine smile.
"No," Evan corrected her, smiling down as Ellie grabbed both of their hands, happily swinging between them as they walked toward the courthouse doors. "It’s only just beginning."
