Chapter 10 - The Final Chapter — The Starry SkyThe night was crystal clear, devoid of clouds, exposing a breathtaking canopy of stars stretching across the Greenwich sky.

Evan lay in the center of the giant king-sized bed, the house completely silent around him.

The lamps were off. Total, absolute darkness filled the room.

Three years ago, that darkness would have choked him, dragging him back down into the screeching metal and the cold rain of Stamford. Three years ago, he would have kept every light blazing just to keep the ghosts at bay.

Now, he breathed in the quiet night air, his body heavy with natural, hard-earned exhaustion.

Beside him, Nora stirred, her hand resting comfortably over his chest. Down the hall, soft, rhythmic breathing drifted from the bedrooms.

Evan opened his eyes in the dark, looking up toward the ceiling where the moonlight spilled across the floorboards.

He didn't see the accident. He didn't see the guardrail.

Instead, he saw a bright, fierce star shining higher than all the rest—a star that didn't demand he stay awake in the dark, but whispered gently into the night wind, telling him it was safe to rest.

Evan Mercer closed his eyes, smiled in the quiet room, and finally drifted off to sleep.
