Chapter 8 - The Clearing SkiesThe rain finally stopped by Saturday afternoon, leaving the grounds of the Greenwich estate washed in brilliant, crisp autumn sunlight.

Evan sat on the back patio, a steaming mug of coffee in one hand, watching the construction crew put the finishing touches on the newly renovated staff cottage.

The heavy, suffocating darkness that had lived in his chest for three years was gone. In its place was a quiet, enduring peace. The ghost of Grace hadn't vanished; rather, she felt closer now—not as a tragedy trapped on a wet highway, but as the bright, laughing woman who loved blueberry pancakes and believed in second chances.

A pair of small pink socks pattered across the stone patio.

Evan looked down. Lucy stood there, wearing a dinosaur hoodie two sizes too big, holding her one-eared stuffed rabbit by its single ear.

"Mr. Mercer," Lucy announced importantly.

"Yes, Agent Bennett?" Evan smiled, pulling out the chair opposite him.

"Mom says thank you for the new roof. And the kitchen."

"Your mother is very welcome." Evan reached over, pouring a small glass of apple juice and setting a plate piled high with golden, syrup-drenched pancakes in front of her. "I hear you're an expert on turtles."

Lucy climbed onto the chair, her eyes lighting up at the sight of the syrup. "The turtle was right, you know."

"About what?"

"You didn't forget her," Lucy said simply, taking a massive bite of pancake. "You just stopped being mad at the dark."

Evan looked out over the sprawling green lawn toward the horizon, where the sun was beginning to set in a blaze of gold and amber.

Nora walked out from the cottage carrying a fresh tray of coffee, her hair catching the evening light. She paused, catching Evan’s eye, and offered a warm, genuine smile—a smile free of fear, secrets, or shadows.

Evan raised his mug to her, returning the smile.
