Chapter 7 - The Invitation at DawnAt 6:00 AM, Julian Vance sat behind the massive mahogany desk in his penthouse office overlooking Wall Street, sipping black coffee.

His phone buzzed. It was an alert from his security system at his private Hamptons estate.

Julian frowned, tapping the live camera feed.

The screen flickered to life, showing the grand iron gates of his driveway. Standing in the pouring rain, drenched from head to toe, was Evan Mercer.

Evan wasn't wearing a raincoat. His custom suit was soaked through, clinging to his broad shoulders. He wasn't knocking on the gatehouse door; he was standing motionlessly right in front of the camera lens, staring directly into the infrared sensor with eyes that promised absolute destruction.

Julian dropped his coffee cup. It shattered on the marble floor, dark liquid splattering across his Italian leather shoes.

"Open the gates," Julian stammered into his intercom, his voice shaking. "Let him in!"

Ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors of the penthouse study swung open.

Evan walked in, bringing the smell of rain and ozone with him. He didn't look tired. He looked like a storm incarnate.

Julian forced a nervous, slick smile, rising from his desk. "Evan! What a... unexpected surprise. To what do I owe the pleasure at this ungodly hour? Is this about Arthur? Look, if he messed up at the firm—"

Evan reached into his soaked jacket, pulled out the manila envelope, and tossed it across the polished desk.

The photographs and the cassette recorder slid across the wood, stopping right against Julian’s coffee blotter.

Julian’s face drained of all color. He looked down at the pictures as if they were venomous snakes.

"Where... where did you get this?" Julian whispered, his bravado entirely evaporated.

"Arthur tried to steal four million yesterday," Evan said, his voice flat, emotionless, and absolute. "I fired him. Then I went looking for why your family name leaves such a foul stench in Stamford."

Julian backed away until his legs hit the bookshelf. "Evan, listen to me. It was business. Grace was digging into things that could have ruined—"

"I know," Evan interrupted softly.

Before Julian could lunge for the panic button beneath his desk, Evan crossed the room with terrifying speed. He grabbed Julian by the lapels of his designer suit, lifting him off his feet and slamming him against the heavy oak bookshelves. Books rained down around them in a chaotic avalanche.

"You didn't just ruin business, Julian," Evan hissed, pressing his forearm against Julian’s windpipe. "You took my wife. You took my seven-month-old daughter. You stole my life."

"Please—" Julian choked out, clawing at Evan's wrists. "I'll give you everything! My shares, my accounts, my properties—"

"I don't want your money, Julian," Evan whispered into his ear. "I have more money than God. What I want is justice."

The study door clicked open.

Step-by-step, two local state troopers walked into the room, led by a high-ranking lieutenant holding an arrest warrant signed by a federal judge less than an hour ago.

"Julian Vance, you're under arrest for the conspiracy and premeditated murder of Grace and Caroline Mercer," the lieutenant announced, stepping forward with handcuffs ready.

As the cold steel bracelets snapped around Julian’s wrists, Evan stepped back, smoothing his wet lapel. He looked down at Julian with absolute pity.

"Enjoy the cell, Julian," Evan said quietly. "You're going to have a lot of time to think. And unlike me... you won't have any bedtime stories to help you sleep."
